How to smother coals for the next time?

Yay! My first post here! I'm so happy!!
I've got a brand new Large Egg, and going to use it tonight!! Pork loins...

Anyway, my question is:
I've read that with the new dual function top vent, with the daisy wheel, that it won't completely put out the coals so as to be saved for next time.
And I have noticed those green looking smothering like thingys in some photo's.
I have not seen these for sale, or know what they are called.
I'd like to make a home made one...I'm handy...
Terra cotta saucer or flower pot? Steel disk laid on top?
Idea's?
Thanks a ton!
Looking foward to being a member of the family!

When I bought mine it came with the green cover and the feet (for using without nest or table)

I would call you dealer and see why you didn't get one

  • The green thing is called the rain cap, and it usually comes with the egg. Shutting the daisy wheel will put out the fire, just not quite as fast as the green rain cap.

You should have gotten the ceramic rain cap with the Egg but if you don't have one put a piece of foil over the vent and the daisy down over it. -RP

the cast-iron daisy thingy will do the job, eventually.

let it gunk up over time and it will do the job (as well as stave off rust). don't obsessively clean it, and instead allow some soot and fat to make it a bit more airtight.

ideally though, your egg will come with a rain cap. cap goes on the egg when done, daisy goes inside.

First of all congratulations and welcome to the forum.

This link will take you to a place that shows you what everything is called on the egg. http://www.biggreenegg.com/components.html

However, the 'green cap' Ceramic Rain Cap and Ceramic Feet are not show. You should have received both of these items with your purchase.

For now use some foil under the DFMT and close the bottom vent when shutting down the egg.

In the beginning I used foil under the Rain Cap, eventually I ended up getting some felt and put a felt strip in my Rain Cap.

If you purchased from an authorized (non internet) dealer you should receive these items, if not I would call BGE directly and bring the issue up with them.

Like stated in this thread, you should have received a rain cap with your purchase and if not, call the place that sold it to you.

Where in Oregon are you? I am in the West Linn area.

I'd go back to the dealer and ask for them before I went the BGE directly. At least give them a chance to clear it up - maybe just an oversight.

If a new car is missing floormats do you go back to the showroom or call Detroit (or Tokyo as your personal tastes dictate)?

    Dealer first, by all means!

  • I just close up the daisy and lower vent and it goes right out. Never used my cap or feet for anything yet.

    Thank you everybody!
Not knowing the rain cap should have been included with my BGE, I'll give them a call in the morning.
By the way, we just finished eating up the pork loin, and if I don't say so myself; it was dang fine!
    Wife even said so!
I'm really thinking I'm hooked for life!
Pizza's, breads, grilling, barbeque, smoking and dutch oven cooking...am I forgetting anything? (probably!)
    Thanks again!
    Sincerely,

Using the ceramic cap stuffs the fire out 13% faster and saves 17% more lump.

However... 78% of all statics are made up.
