How much tending is required?

I haven't got my BGE yet, and am new to the board. I was wondering if it is possible for me to put on a roast in the morning before work, say 6:30 am, then leave for work, not getting back till 5:00pm, and have something waiting for me, that is DELICIOUS? OR, do I need to be here the whole day, to tend it??[p]Thanks
Patti

  • Patti Cavender, As I answered in your previous question, get a Guru! It is my best purchase, after the egg.

Patti Cavender, after a while, yes. It'll take a few cooks to get accustomed to it and to find the right settings for your BGE. After a while you'll think nothing about leaving something on for a while. However, many grilled items do not require that long of a cooking time. I normally reserve my long cooks for the weekend when I'm there just to check things out periodically. I think that you will find like many of us that you will do a lot more cooking on the grill and a lot less cooking in the oven.

    Patti Cavender,
other dave is almost correct. with a guru you can cook while away from the cooker, you need something to remind you that you are cooking to go with it.

Patti Cavender,[p]As previously posted, onece you get the hang of things after a few overnight cooks, all you need is a Maverick ET-73 wireless dual temp gadget and a better half at home to call you when the alarm goes off. Mine calls me ASAP, but is learning what to do depending on which alarm (hi or lo) goes off.[p]I guess the bbq guru would take care of all sorts of things though.

    Patti Cavender,
As the others have said, the short answer is 'yes'. But when you say "a roast"...how big of a roast are you talking? I recently cooked 15 pounds of pork butt for 16+ hours and had plenty of heat/fuel left for several more hours. This is not uncommon. But a small roast would not require an all day cook.
    Good luck!
