Finally broke down and bought my own egg a couple weeks ago after coveting my buddy's for months. I never even knew I needed an egg until using his! I have been cooking on mine pretty much every day that I'm not working and love it (obviously). My only trouble is the rear 6" or so of the gasket has become detached and half burnt up. When I close the dome, it rubs the back of the base pushing the lower gasket forward. I set the rings up as the directions say but it appears this problem should be fixable by adjusting them up or down on the lid or base. Any suggestions?

What size egg do you have?

Call BGE (and or your dealer) and let them know your gasket has come off your new egg. They should send you out a new gasket set. Ask for the Nomex gasket.

I would think the rings you are referring to are the bands that hold onto the base and hold the dome.

Hopefully the ceramics are not rubbing when opening or closing the egg.

  • I have a large egg. Yes, I am referring to the bands holding the base and dome. I don't believe the ceramic is rubbing but I will call BGE and see what they recommend. Thanks!

    Cheesegghead,

It sounds as though you may not have the bands square to the base or dome. You should have the same amount of ceramic showing below the dome band and above the base band. Should be around 1/8" or so. If you go to adjust make sure you ty-rap the bands together before you loosen the bolts.

I wasn't sure what to make out with the upper gasket pushing the lower gasket forward.

I can't speak for BGE, however, I would expect you will receive a new gasket set.

If the existing gasket looks like it is causing problems then you might think about cutting out a small section of the 'balled up' gasket. Personally, I would just leave it until a new gasket set came. In any case I would still keep using the egg.

Little Steven has a good thought there. Look at your bands and make sure they are seated up close to the molded ceramics in the base and dome.

If the bands slip away from the molded stop that would allow more space for the gaskets. You don't want the bands to be at the open edge of the base or dome. The band bolts should be tightened enough to have a bend in them.
