Bought my first smoker...An egg
tallen
Posts: 7
After many years of grilling on gas, I purchased a BGE yesterday. This is in no small part from reading all of the posts on this (and other) forums.
I bought a large egg with nest and mates, plate setter, large baking stone, lump charcoal, wood chips, v-rack, and ash scooper. (my wife is visiting relatives and doesnt know what Ive spent yet) She comes home on Saturday, and hopefully she wont be too mad.
Anyways, it took me about 1.5 hours to set up the nest, spring assembly and mates. About an hour after that, I had a 4lb chicken cooking at 350. An hour later, I had my first successful cook. One of the things I noticed when I cut into the chicken was how juicy it was. I was worried that it wasnt done enough, because when I grill, it is usually a little dryer. I know now that was just fine, and the BGE kept all those juices in. NICE...
The hardest part about yesterday was trying not to open the cooker and see the goodness inside while the egg was doing its job.
Please add another convert to your roster.
Anybody want to buy a Turbinado stainless steel grill? I dont need it anymore.

Welcome to the forum tallen. Congratualtions on your first cook. The fun is just starting. Next thing you have to do is go to an eggfest and meet everyone on the forum. Atlanta is a great one and it's coming up in Oct.
Hope to meet you someday! -
Congratulations and welcome to the BGE family. Not to worry about the Mrs.. She'll only be mad until she eats off the egg. A week from now she'll be puting in cook requests! Your chicken exercise went eggactly the same as my first chicken. I could not get my head around those juices following. I kept thinking that thing would never be done. But it was! Wait until you do Steak-Brisket-Pork etc. It's all so good!

Welcome to the, I believe one egghead described it as, the cult
Given your wife's lack of participation in the purchace I'd stronly recommend your cook up a butt or ribs (or her favorite food) to show your stuff and value proposition the egg brings to Q'ing.
Good luck and welcome to the forum. -
Welcome Tallen. Your wife will soon see you are capable o making wise choices without her input. But you must prepare yourself for the future--that is when she starts asking you when you will be adding a second egg to the family.Larry

You'll need that grill to store your egg stuff, don't be too quick to let it go.
 :P :woohoo:
Kidding aside welcome to the converted, there's no better way I have ever seen to cook a chicken than Spatchcock on an egg based on the quality of food to effort measure. Dead easy and soooo good.
Another cook that the egg does way better than the gasses is burgers believe it or not.

One thing you can tell your wife, if she's unhappy about the expense, is that you will most likely save lots of money not eating at restaurants. There are a few places my wife and I visited regularly for years till I got my first Egg. Within months, we stopped 'cause I could cook better for a 1/3 of the price.

Welcome aboard
you will never regret the Large, it will really do you a good job, Enjoy. -
How many gassers have you owned in your life. The EGG is the last one you will ever buy!! Unless of course you add another one to the family. Just the savings in gas will some what pay for it!! Welcome aboard, Have fun, and GOOD COOKIN!!! :woohoo:

Greetings tallen,
Welcome to the greatest forum. Congratulations on the egg, now that you have it and have demonstrated how great it is it's now time to teach the wife how to cook on it. None of this mamby pamby putting on your apron and cooking for her! As you can see from this forum egging is not a male only past time. There are real men here that have delegated the egging to the little woman while they kick back, put their feet up and enjoy a cold one. I'm sure you have the little wife trained and she recognizes you as the boss and superior intellect and it is her life's greatest endeavor to make you happy. Cooking you perfect meals on the new egg is the easiest way to accomplish that. Take control, enjoy the fruits of your labors!!!
I am still single, I can't imagine why?
All kidding aside, congrats on the egg and on finding this forum.

Welcome.
Save up for a thermopen - instant read thermometer. Works great and no more guessing if its done or not just by looking at it or length of time.
Its hard to resist opening the egg alot when you are a new egger. Good for you that you already got that figured out!
Good luck and enjoy. Post pics - we love pictures!
