Is lump a seasonal item ???

Is lump only carried during the spring/summer? Went to Home Depot had none. Went to K-mart on clearance for 4.89 for 8.8 lb of RO, bought the last 6 bags. Went to Wal-mart they have 23 bags left. Is the something that needs to be stocked up on now. Seems very early.

It can be had in the winter, but most stores let lump dwindle in the winter. If you stock up now, you'll be in good shape
-
I would think stores would still carry it up till October. I live in the NC mountains and in September we are still in the 80s.
-
We carry lump all year just got a fresh pallet in last week and more cowboy brand (yuckie lol) Check your local egg dealer or hardware stores. The small stores are normaly willing to keep it on hand if you buy it there and spread the word.
Big Boxes dont care period. Might cost a lil more but service is worth it sometimes......
-
like the 1980's?
-
Yeah that too..

It is here, and I want someone to PLEASE explain that to me. I live in FLORIDA...you know....warm till the Rose Bowl and it gets warm again when pitchers and catchers report....and that's in NORTH FLORIDA!!!! Last year I thought I was going to have to order by mail!!! Fortunately Ace Hardware ships free to their stores. As soon as I get to my new home I'm going to buy 200 lbs. It's the most stupid thing I've seen that I can't hardly buy lump during FOOTBALL SEASON!!!!

-
No ex-gasser, more like late 70's...it IS hippie, dippy Western NC after all!!!
-
I hear ya. That makes no sense at all! -25 up here in Canada in January and I can find it. (I have to search for it but I can find it)
-
Who wants to watch FSU football anyway?
-
Dude, just buy often and early. Build a stockpile. No reason to get bent out of shape over it.
-
That would last me 3 weeks. It is like Christmas, happens the time every year. Just a little planning.

notice the extreme sharp reaction....it's the FSU
He's still mad Bobby may lose some wins -
Restaurant Depot carries large amounts all year long. I'll be there tomorrow stocking up on beef ribs and lump.
-
Be careful at Restaurant Depot. They have not been carrying the US stuff as of late.
Someone called their distributor/supplier and was told they had a huge stockpile of the Argentine stuff and it would take them some time to turn that inventory before they replaced it with more US Royal Oak.
Buyer beware. If the stitched seal on top of the bag is black then don't buy it. If it is the same color as the bag then you should be fine. Your particular store may still have some of the US stuff in stock, just be careful. -
No problem here in Minne
Even when we have 30-40 inches of ice on the lakes
The whole idea of a grilling "Season" still gets me giggling. -
I have 140 lbs on hand now, which would last some of you two weeks. As I run out, if Wal-Mart doesn't have it, my dealer stocks Ozark Oak so I'm okay. My wife can't get out of her car now, so I'm afraid if I double my load, I'll really be in trouble.
-
I get RO at my local grocery store all year long. They always have a few bags on the shelf. There are a couple of other stores that stock other brands, but I'm not wild about them. As a last resort, there's always the BGE dealer, but that lump is fairly pricey.
-
I would build a lump barn!
-
If you have a Kroger or Kroger owned or Korger associated store(s) in you area, talk with them and use the Korger lump. It is Royal Oak the same as BGE.
The Kroger stores will order a bag or pallet all you need to do is ask. No shipping.

Super Wal Mart here stocks it all year, local grocery store Crest stocks Ozark Oak all year round too
-
Up in the northeast the supermarkets and hardware stores seem to stop carrying it after they run out of their 1 shipment for the summer. I go to a traditional coal and ice place here, though they are going up in price (from 15 for 22lbs of wicked good to $18). I might have to buy a pallet and drive to the distributor.....
-
Now, now, pick up the crayons and go back to coloring.
It's not easy to store lump for some of us. Not everyone lives in big houses or has a storage shed, or even a garage. -
I think the closest Kroger is over 160 miles, in Jacksonville, I'm not even sure about that, it may be Atlanta.
-
What happens here is that everyone quits carrying about mid-September, except the Egg dealers and Publix. Publix usually has 2-3 small bags at a time when they are fully stocked here. Unless I start buying in July or August it just becomes more and more difficult to find. One of the dealers here told me that he had trouble keeping RO last year.
Just an example: Last year on Labor Day I saw one Wal-Mart here put lump on "seasonal clearout". It was the Royal Oak. The manager told me that they had JUST GOTTEN five pallets in that week. They sold it all for less than five bucks a bag. Why? Because almost immediately they started putting up the CHRISTMAS items where all the grills and charcoal was!!! -
It's called retail merchandising. Stock the hottest sellers for the sales period.
No reason to get all up in arms about it. -
Heck, getting all bent is the only way I know to make a point that these retailers understand. Money doesn't seem to make any difference. You buy from some places year after year after year and then they still screw with you. There is no loyalty to the customer with so many places, so I'm to the point of taking my dollar to the lowest bidder or where the supply is.
Yeah, I know, I'm on my high horse, but I'm tired of being lied to, stomped on, and screwed without even a kiss!!! -
I am sure it can be difficult. I guess I am lucky because my Publix has lump and nearly every Walmart has RO. There are 2-3 egg dealers and 1 other ceramic dealer that all carry lump. I can get RO, publix, green egg, ozark oak, nature glo and several others any time of the year.

Kroger owns a lot of different smaller chains. Clear out here in the west Kroger has bought out a regional chain called "Smith's Food Stores".
Go to the Korger site and see what chains they own and take a look. You may not have a Kroger but you well may have a Kroger owned store. Sure is worth checking IMO.
