Gulf Shores Restaurants

I'm making the trek from Chicago to Gulf Shores, AL later this week for a long family vacation with my wife and kids. We have about 25 family members meeting up for a family reunion of sorts.

Since I'm always thinking about food and what I'm going to eat next, I'm looking for restaurant recommendations for some good seafood in Gulf Shores. It seems like there are a lot of choices so I need some help. I would prefer something right on the beach.

Thanks,

Mo Daddy

Been there twice this year, so far.

Most of the beach restaurants are typical touristy seafood places.

When you are coming in to Gulf Shores on highway 59 you will cross the highway leading to Fort Morgan (to your right-west). Just past this intersection on the right, is a great place (lots of locals there) called "Big O's". This establishment has been there a long time and has become one of our favorites. Last time we were in G.S, our previous favorite was Doc's (in Orange Beach at the intersection with canal road), but it was very disappointing. I think too many tourists have found it and the quality has gone down.

Of course you gotta take the kids to LuLu's at Homeport (under the big bridge). The owner, Lucy, is Jimmy Buffet's sister and has a great restaurant, though quite a tourist trap in the gift shop. Fun, though!

I will email you a "new" discovery.

It is worth the relatively short drive.

The Original Oyster House is good. Their gumbo is terrific - they add blue crab claws to it.

One of my favorites is not on the beach, but is on the water in the bay - The Back Porch. Great food, outdoor dining, and the best orange cake you'll ever try.

The Original Oyster House is real good. Many time over the years...
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given another Mini to add to the herd.

Original Oyster House is a pretty safe bet. You might also try Mikee's. Good food...however, it is pretty tight in terms of room and a big group may not be a good situation for you.

Original Oyster house is good. Louisiana Lagniappe down by the pass is pretty good as well. If you want a burger for lunch try the sourdough burgers at Pink Pony by the public beach.

    All are great suggestions!

Try the Hangout in Gulf Shores....not too far from the Pink Pony...

  • Doc's Seafood in Orange Beach. Hole in the wall but the best shrimp and gumbo in the area.

  • I always go to Gulf Shores Steamer when I'm down there. They specialize in steamed Royal Red Shrimp and crab legs, along with other stuff. All steamed food and well-seasoned. The have a Bucket Of Reds and a (draft) Pitcher that feeds/quenches two for about 25 bucks (plus some corn on the cob and new potatoes included)or they have large platters.

Also King Neptunes is very good, on 59 about 1/4 mi. from the beach, on the west side of the road, right next to the dive shop.

Went to Doc's last year and was impressed. No fancy dishes, just standard seafood, but very good. My favorite place was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan - that was Coconut Willie's in Orange Beach. Never ate anything there but crab claws - the very best anywhere, but no more. Bahama Bob's has a good pecan-crusted grouper.

Oh, also Sun Place Else II used to be excellent and reasonable - some New Orleans style (seafood) dishes on their menu, but haven't been there in a while. The first one by the beach was also destroyed, but the second one on Fort Morgan Rd. is still there, I believe. Original Oyster House is OK, but kind of standard - nothing special.

Oh man, why did you have to remind me of those crab claws at Coconut Willies?? :(

That's gonna really get me down today....

Jerry, Doc's has been "discovered". We always went there at least once every trip. But when we were there Memorial Day weekend, the food was mediocre at best. Very disappointed. I had a fried platter and the fried food tasted good, but just kinda 'mushy' and not crispy. Jana had a platter of Royal Reds and she struggled to peel every one - the shell pulled off pieces of meat.

I think their reputation has ruined their quality - trying to feed to many people.

Big'O's is now our "go to" place.
