I am visiting my folks and using my Father's large BGE to cook a 3.5 # beef roast. How long do I need to cook it at 350 to be done? I am cooking this afternoon for supper so I need a quick reply if possible.[p]Thanks in advance.[p]Bill

  • Bill T,
If you have a cookbook, refer to it for minutes/pound guidelines. If you cook it indirect in the egg, it is pretty much like cooking it in an oven. I'd guess 15-20 minutes per pound? So you are looking at something like an hour. [p]TNW

Bill T,[p]8 years of Eggsperience has shown me that oven recipes do not exactly equate to BGE cooking. You will need to run dome temps of 380-400° to get 350 at the actual cooking grid level on indirect cooks. Then 15-20 minutes per pound is a good estimate. Preheat your Egg for at lease 30 minutes.[p]JMHO[p]K~G

  • KennyG,
Agreed, but considering how many people don't know what temperature their oven is really cooking at, I don't think the 30-50 degrees is going to make much of a difference. (That's why Alton Brown frowns and says, "You DO have one of these, don't you?" while holding an oven thermometer.) Hopefully, he will cook to an appropriate internal temperature, and the exact timing is not crucial. [p]TNW

The Naked Whiz,[p]I'm a big fan of Alton Brown and agree that internal temp rules! [p]With my fetish for cookers and temp measuring toys, I've done exhaustive experimentation with various recipes that called for X degrees and Y minutes in your gas or elec oven.[p]Just reporting my findings for what they are worth.[p]K~G
