Proabably a stupid question. What is the advantage of the cast iron grate besides leaving great marks?

Cast iron heats evenly and retains heat better. After it is well seasoned it is pretty nonstick. I was looking at one yesterday at my local Ace Hardware. $54

it reduces sear time which helps give a better uniform color throughout the meat, and sears at lower temps, no need to go to 800, 600 works fine. and it makes great lines B) they also seem to break from stress caused by the heat, not bad though and usually just in one area which allows you to toss smoking chips in during the cook, im not sure if that was in the plans but it works for me

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • Thanks. Any thing special to season it?

I love mine. They are reverseable, flat on one side, pointed on the other. The flat side is great for burgers and smaller stuff. It won't fall thru the openings. The pointed side is better for steaks and stuff.I just threw mine on and started cookin.I apply a little oil after cooks to keep rust away. ;)

$54??? I have purchased 2, one from kohls for $24 and the one I love from targer, a lodge, for $18, can't beat the blackened fish on the CI skillet.

Thank you for the heads-up! IMHO, 54 bucks(+tax) is way beyond reason, and as brittle as CI products are, they probably tend to break at a common (temp/impact) stress factor. As I've said before, I enjoy cooking with CI and the skillets are amongst my favorite utensils. Just haven't been enthused enough to buy a grate for my LBGE as yet. BTW, Lodge recommends using a solid shortening (like Crisco) for seasoning CI.~~

I love my BGE Cast Iron Grate. The first one I bought cracked, but so did several others we had sold at the store. I think they just had a bad batch. My replacement one has never cracked, and I have had on the 2 inch fire ring close to the fire at 800 degrees. The flat side is great for burgers and vegetables, and since the grates are closer together than the porcelain grate you dont need a special grate to keep small items from falling through.
