Why do you all have multiple eggs?
Bama Egger
Posts: 137
I have been lurking here for a while, thinking about buying my first egg because I love barbecue. I am a little nervous because it seems once you buy an Egg, all you folks seem to buy a second, and a third. My wife will be fine with one, but she'll throw me out if the patio becomes a cluster of little green aliens! Why do egg-heads seem to have multiples?

Paul,
Although I don’t have a small yet, the short answer is what do you grill on after you have started 8 pounds of pork shoulder?
In my case, I have to use the Wolf in the kitchen to grill on or I eat something besides grilled food. Not a problem, just a matter of flexibility. One should be just fine.

Paul,
Because we have been assimilated...[p]Seriously, (yeah, right) I got a small to go with the large because my wife was challenging other people to cook something better than I could (yes, this is the wife that dropped two cell phones into portapotties in 8 days) and I wanted an egg that was semi-portable so I could back her up if need be in a remote location. Plus, there are times when I want to do two things at the same time at different temps. I do consider my second egg to be a luxury, but I had my wife's blessing....

Paul,
For me it's a matter of capacity. I can't see firing the large for one or two steaks; can't fit whole brisket or 3 shoulders on the small.[p]Ken

Paul,
Why do I have three BGEs you ask...I bought the large and then for two consecutive birthdays my wife gave me a small and then a medium. Guess you can say my wife is a believer as will yours be.
OTOH having been a banker for 29 years of my life I have observed first hand that you can't take your money with you when you die no matter how rich you are!
Now ask the question another way...will being an egger get in your blood, sure! but that shouldn't stop you from owning at least one. You'll wonder why you waited so long!!!

The Naked Whiz,[p]You know, my wife didn't really oblect to the purchase of our small either.

Paul,[p]She won't throw you out when you start feeding her egg food that causes everything else she's had to pale in comparison...[p]Get one...let her get a taste...she'll come around![p]QBabe

Paul,
I like to do multiple cooks that just would not be possible with only one egg. For example, when I do ribs on my large, I will also do baked beans on the small and grill a chicken breast on the mini (my daughter does not like ribs!). Tonight I am smoking salmon filets on the large and will grill some zuchini on the small. If steak is on the menu, then baked potatos get done on the large, steak on the small. When we went camping this past summer I took the small and mini. Every meal that we had was cooked on one or both of these. I could get by with one, but it just would not be as much fun (nor would the food taste quite as good that had to be done more conventionally).
-
Paul,
Because We CAN? Actually it got awful tiring draging a large to football games so I bought a mini. The boys left for college and I bought a small just for the two of us. Now I can do multiple things a once on the large, small and mini.

Paul,
Awww, Mr Big looked lonely so we added a Small. Really, all the other answers say it very well; multiple cooks, and size flexibility. I lived with only the Large for two years, but I enjoy the convenience of the added Small. They are both great investments. My husband didn't blink when I asked for the Small as a birthday gift; he's so delighted with everything prepared on the Egg. Your wife will be, too.
Cheers,
Gretl

Paul,
two reasons for owning a large and a small. .. [p]first. .. efficiency, when i'm only doing a few burgers or 1 or 2 steaks, the small is just more efficient (though certainly not necessary). . .[p]second. .. and more important. . .as i do more and more complete meals in my eggs, it allows me to cook differenct foods at differenct temps at the same time. . .before i got the small, i'd have to stage my dishes (say, do a big pot of baked beans for hours at lower temps, pull the pot and keep it warm while i fired the egg up searing temps for steaks, etc. . .). . [p]it just adds an extra layer of convenience to my cooking. .[p]btw, i plan to add a third at some point in the future

Ok, I just ordered a medium, it should arrive next week. My first egg! I'm looking forward to ribs, pulled pork and perhaps some steaks. The decision was between Egg or Gas, I chose Egg. Wish me luck.

Paul,
Its called Polyeggamist and it is legal! At least for now. Some environmentalist out there might someday try to argue that Polyeggamist are harming the environment with all that smoke. Marty

Paul,
Congrats, and no luck is needed. The dirty little secret about the egg is that it is much more forgiving than pretty much anything else you will cook with. I’m living proof; my culinary skills are not responsible for the great Q and grilled food we get to eat.
-
Paul,
One: because we can
Two: what if one is in use on a lo 'n' slo? What do you do your steaks on? What do you grill your veggies on?
Three: Because the cult leaders want us to have them.
-
Paul,
Well, my sound stupid but, I have 2 larges. One for high temps in case of firebox cracking and also low and slow for pulled pork on a lot of ribs. The second is used only for low and slow. The mini and soon to be medium are used for Nascar and Chiefs events.
My wife gave up a long time ago about me and my grills, currently 8 but only using a few selected green ones.[p]CWM

Paul,
It is more about tools than toys.
Do you own just one screwdriver?
Does a golfer use more than one club?
Does an artist need just one brush?[p]Do Eggheads need just one egg? [p]Actually, each sized egg has its own special characteristic that makes it worth owning.

Paul,
O.K. I wish you luck. Hang here, ask questions, check if you're not sure about a cook. This forum is great. [p]I'm still learning and appreciate the help from the forum members. Congratulations on your new egg.[p]Regards,
New Bob

Sundown, #3 just as I suspected.
-
Paul,[p]Cuz I can cook twice as much?!
-
Paul,[p]You won't regret it! Congrats and welcome.
-
Paul, if your wife will be fine with one, after six months she will be fine with two. Just wait until she asks you to grill something and your response is "Honey, I only have one grill." You'll get that second one. Did you notice how many of us have second grills purchased by our spouses?

One word of caution, Paul- the only useful pages in the owner's manual that comes with the Egg are the pictures showing the parts of the Egg and the registration card page. Take the rest of it and use it as fire starter![p]Jim

mad max beyond eggdome,
does your wife know that?????????????
-
Paul, one egg = lots of fun. two eggs = twice as much fun.
