BGE coal efficency

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
I recently got a great deal on a new BGE. Long story, so I'll spare teh details. I read for years how effecient the BGE was with the coals and I guess I set my epectation very high. I'm filling the bottom until I fill the holes, but it seems like I have to fill it each time I use the BGE. Any suggestions?

gadog,[p]I think we'll need a bit more inforamtion than what you're giving us. I generally fill my egg up each time too, but it's more like a "recharge". It's NOT like I have to completely refill the firebox. There are times when I can get by without adding any new charcoal - usually for something requiring a lower temp, for a brief period.

  • Pakak,
I guess I had a misconception that I could use the BGE without refilling it. I think everything is fine after your comment. I usually have to "recharge" the egg. I usually fill the firebox to cover the holes up. THe next time I use it, the holes in the firebox are uncovered and I have to refill the box.

  • gadog,
My take on the claim that a bag of lump "lasts for months" is sure, if you don't open the bag -- grin!

gadog,[p]Only filling with lump to just above the holes isnt really much lump, and you will certainly need more for the high temp cooks.[p]I generally fill it up to the top of the firebox (not the top of the fire ring mind you :-)[p]Anhwhere between the top of the holes and the top of the firebox is fine, it all depends on how long you will be cooking, the cooking temps and if you want to refill every time.
  • gadog,
full charge is about 4.5 lbs top of fire box / bottom of fire ring.
after burgers or steaks refill isnt needed. can cook 3 or 4 short cooks on a full charge.
low and slow 20+ hrs takes a full charge but has some left over.
if your egg dosent exstinguish the coals look for air leaks.
