Hot Dog Experiment

A couple of days ago there was a post about burgers on the BGE vs. gasser. One of the responses was about slow cooking hot dogs at 250º for an hour (and I added cherry wood chips). With nothing better to do last night I gave it a try. The dogs were good, but I don’t know that I would purposely take that amount of time again for hot dogs. For those of you who like the smoke on your potato, the fries came out very well. Put them on frozen and they eventually crisped up. Low fat too, 3 ½ grams per serving straight out of the bag and a thin spray of oil on the cast iron.

considering that a hotdog is completly cooked before you ever take it out of the package to start with, it seems to me that cooking it again for an hour is gross overkill. .LOL. .. you probably dried it out, even in the egg. .. i can't imagine that a whole lot of smoke penetrated that dense meat either. ...heck of few minutes of grilling applies enough smoke/grill flavor to the outside of a dog to give it all the flavor its gonna get....sounds like a pretty good waste of time to me!! .. .fun experiment though. ...thanks sharing. ..

It wasn't that dry, but won't do it again. The winner was the "smoked" fries. Since my first cook on the BGE, I've always liked the flavor the charcoal adds to the potato.LBGE Katy (Houston) TX

The fries look really good!
I went the opposite way last night. Too a bunch of 1/4 lb. all-beef dogs. Slit them in half, and did them direct, cut side down. They browned up really nicely in just a few minutes.
There was one over a hot spot, so it became a char-dog. :( -
I like the melanoidins too much on hot dogs, not to burn em good over direct heat.

I agree with smoking spuds. I need to try the fries.

nice looking cook, and great idea for the fries.....I'm not sure I would spend an hour on dogs but they look great

I like them split with some cooper sharp cheese.

I am going to try the french fries. I like to roll hot dogs in Dizzy dust or cow lick and grill them around 350- 400 indirect.
