Myself and a friend purchased two new grills. I purchased the large and my friend purchased the Xlarge. I have no problem getting my large to 650'F., But my friend cannot get his Xlarge to that Temp. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem. And anybody else with the Xlarge with the same problem?

I am Assuming the fire grate is in the fire box and the lump is on top of the fire grate. How much lump is in the egg? Fill it to the fire ring or a little above the top of the fire box. Open the bottom vent all the way and close the dome. Then remove the daisy wheel top. Don't walk away or you will be posting that your gasket is fried. My XL gets to temp quick. Take it easy on the temp for the first few cooks.

I just bought my first BGE (medium) a couple of month ago and used to have the same problem. Panhandle is 100% right. Make sure the metal plate is in the bottom of the firebox and the holes are clear to allow air up into the fire. Before I start the fire I work the old lump around inside to knock the ashes down through the holes.
But the biggest thing is to not be stingy with the charcoal. The “one inch” over the holes worked for a short 300 – 400 cook but not for any duration.
I fill mine to about the top of the fire box every time now regardless of what I’m cooking. It’s not like it goes to waste as you’re not burning it if you don’t need the heat. Soon as your done close her up and it will be there the next time you cook. -
Well, I am new to all this -just started last week with a XL BGE.
I had the same problem - I couldn't get it up
The advice I got here was that I was not probably not using enough lump. Once I started to use more lump, I no longer had that problem
So fill 'er up. Like someone said, once you are done cooking, just close 'er down, and you will find you have a bunch of unburnt lump to use next time.
Good luck,

Been beyond 650 a few times on my XL without any trouble but not anymore - I save those temps for the small and mini. To be honest, i was a little uncomfortable at the very high temps on the XL. It's not just the high temp - it's the overall mass. Be sure to burp that gorilla especially at the high temps.

I have used the LUMP REDUCER in the first two cooks. One the first it was on its way beyond 500 til I closed all the vents. Anyone else have a LUMP REDUCER for the XL ? Is it possible to get it to 650 with it or do I need to not use it when I want the higher temps ?
