I got the temp at 350. Put on chicken. Temp dropped. Is that o.k. ? Will temp go up or do I need to adjust vent(s) ? I know this is old news for everyone there but this is my first and just want it ot come out good. I hope it impresses my wife.
Thank you.
Gary
Thank you.

once the egg has stabilized, no need to fiddle. the combo of opening the hood and putting in cold meat will drop the internal temp, but it will rise to the stabilized point soon enough. just make sure you put the vent back into the correct position as opening the hood usually changes the settings.

The daisy wheel will not change upon opening the Egg if you follow the directions on the Naked Whiz's site:

Gary,
How long did you let your Egg sit at 350 before putting on the chicken? The longer you let the Egg stabilize (10 - 20ish minutes is good), the cleaner it will burn (this is key - don't won't the wife saying, "This tastes too smokey!!") and the quicker it will come back to temperature when you put the meat on.
Just leave your vents alone and trust the Egg to do what it does - you'll be fine. Good luck, and I hope your wife is impressed!!

Don't change the vent positions once the Egg is stabilized otherwise you will continue chasing the temp. The Egg will come back to temp in 5 to 10 min. The Egg's ceramic holds a lot of heat capacity.

Rosros is right Gary, once it is stabilized you are good. It will eventually come back to you temp. Put your screw at 6 o clock and the daisy won't open every time you open the Egg. Good luck

I am doing Spatchcock chicken. Does the chicken need to be turned ?
Again, Thank you.
Gary -
Not usually. Don't try to get fancy on the first. I will let you in on a trick I accidently learned later. Just get the breast to 160 and the thigh to 180 and call it dinner.
-
I guess I can't go wrong with that little trick.
-
Yes if you are doing raised direct cook. Flip it the last 20 minutes for crispy skin!
-
I should have asked if it was direct or in indirect. I assumed it was indirect.

I got through my first cook on the EGG. I had issues with the DAISYWHEEL. It had opened when I opened the lid and I didn't notice it. The Temp got up to 500 but I caught it on time. I checked the temp of chicken and it was a little over 165 breast. As it turned out, the breasts were juicy as well as the rest of the chicken. I could have put on a lot more rub. The chicken was lacking some flavor. What do you mean by turning the SCREW to 6 o'clock ? Will the screw move if I turn it with a screwdriver ?
Thanks for all the help. I guess next cook will be tri-tip.

Not with a screw dirver, just have the whole daisy turned with the screw at the front of the Egg. It will keep it from opening when you open the Egg as you mentioned.
-
***oops, looks like Panhandle beat me to it.
If you turn the entire daisy wheel so that the screw on the daisy wheel is closest to the front of the egg, facing you, in the six O'clock position, then when you open and close the lid the of the egg the daisy wheel should stay in whatever position you have it set. I think the Nakedwhiz website has some pics and description. -
