Hip replacement advice

I have a close friend that has a right hip problem. His doctor recommends a hip replacement in the near future. Any of you eggers have any advice or experienced one yourself?

Depending on what kind of problem he has, there are new advances in arthroscopy of the hip. He may have straight arthritis problems, though, which only a replacement will help.

Procedure is much improved in recent years with fairly quick recovery - from knowing people who have had it done.

If he gets it done, encourage him to get a narcotic spinal shot - fantastic for diminishing post operative pain for the first 12-15 hours or so !

I broke mine in 1985 and replaced it in 1998. I'm able to do very well compared to what I was able to do with the pain I had to endure after the break and repair.

Just do it.

I had mine replaced last year. I was bone on bone and the pain was nasty. Three months post op and I was playing softball. It's a pretty easy recovery and no PT to speak of, just walking.

I had mine replaced in 2000. It is a bit stiff, but no pain. My doctor always replied when I asked him when should I get the operation: "Whenever you think you should." I waited too long the pain was awful. If you think you are going to do it, do it now.....tom
