I see there are several types of Royal Oak Lump. What are the good types ..... what type is it that Walmart sells ..... I bought a bag and have been mixing it with BGE lump to get a little more mileage from the expensive BGE. Seems to work okay, but mostly small pieces.
I poured the RO into a bin and threw away the bag ... so if the type is marked on the bag, it's gone !!!

Check out this site. More about lump than you will want to read. :P

USA is the only Royal Oak you want to use.
Save your BGE for low and slow cooks and use the RO for everyday cooks. This is the greatest signature EVAR! -
What I buy at Wal-Mart comes in the red and yellow bags and has printed on it, "Made in USA". Don't buy the foreign lump from what the users say. It is too "sparky". (Sorry Doug)

I really like WGC Weekend Warrior Blend. It is pricer but to me it is more then worth it.

i've been having decent luck with the RO paraguayan. The two 18lb bags ive gone through only had 3 small rocks, no unburned peices, and no plywood or other crap that may have shown up in NW's tests. The pieces are usually at least 1.5in or bigger, and with a few real nice chunks in each back.
Its a little sparky at first but it lights pretty easy and comes up to temp easy. It's a little ash heavy but - its affordable and it's really my only option for everyday charcoal other than paying $1.25/lb for BGE lump.
ive heard the argentinian stuff is horrible. i've never tried it. The only thing lowes, home depot and walmart carry around here is goddamned cowboy. -
I have yet to find anything but the USA version of RO at Walmart but lately I can't find it at all so I've had to use the Kingsford "charwood" and so far I don't have many complaints-sparks are minimal I've learned to not stick the map torch so close to the lump when lighting (helps ALLOT!)and ther are many big chunks. Ash is about the same as RO

I've used about six bags of the Royal Oak lump in gree bags from K Mart, and have had as much success--and as many rocks--as the BGE lump.

With BGE lump here (southern california) at $30 per bag I have been using the royal oak from Wallmart and restaraunt depot. Red bag and made in the USA. It seems to be good stuff, I have also recently used Lazarri oak charcoal with good results. Have heard good things about WGC, but I cant't get it here.

Supposedly the BGE lump is really Royal Oak. I've been buying USA RO at Wal-Mart and have had great luck. The last bag I opened had almost all very large pieces - very impressed.Large BGE
