Large vs X Large BGE

I currently have a large BGE. I make lots of pizza, and am considering upgrading to an XL on the notion that I may be able to get a hotter and more sustainable temp of 650, not to mention the additional cooking surface such that I can do 2 at a time. Please advise regarding my heat theory.

  • I don't have an xl, but I don't recall any posts stating that an xl is easier to get to nuke temps. Yes, you will have much more lump burning, but conversely you will have so much more ceramic to heat up. If more room is your main concern, then the xl is the ticket.

If it's grill space that you need/want,go for the XL.If you want a hotter fire in the large, tell us your set-up,and maybe we can help :) .The large will get hot and hold temps, just like all the other egg sizes ;):)

In my large I open the chimney completely and the lower slider wide open. I place the plate setter and pizza stone, close the top and wait about 45 minutes for the stone to heat, as is required for good results. The temp will climb to 600F, which by the time I put the first pizza on (45 mins later) is already starting to burn out, thus requiring more charcoal. I am assuming that the XLs volume may mitigate some of this problem.

Sounds to me like you need to start with more lump, you are using lump right?Fill it to the top of the firebox. You should be able to get it hot enough, and it should last a while. You really shouldn't need to add any lump :) While the XL does hold more lump,it has a larger area to heat, that's why I asked if you needed the space ;)
  • How much lump is in the egg at the start of your pizza cooks?

What brand of lump are you using? Some brands burn faster than others. As others said, make sure you are filling it up to the top of the fire ring.
