I recently went to the grocery store with the wife and saw an interesting product called FireJel www.firejel.com and picked up a pack. It says its a clean burning grill and fire place starter and I have to say I had some really good results with it. I place it under my fire grate stick the lighter in and light it and can have a good fire going. I find its less trouble then using paper towels with oil and other fire starter methods. Have any of you other guys used it and what do you think?

Personally, I just use my electric starter. Never had an issue with it. Never thought about using anything different.

  • yeah I've thought about the electric starter but have heard they have some reliability issues. The nice thing about the FireGel is you peal the lid off the plastic container, light it and it completely melts and is disposed off, no clean up is necessary. Here in Oklahoma we have been having alot of rain and I wanted to find a method of starting my egg without leaving my lid open exposed to all the rain and getting the charcoal wet.

I can see where the rain would be an issue. Have not had that problem yet. Making me think about the issue.

Do you not have to keep the lid open while it is getting going? Thought you had to.

  • You know I used to keep it open for around 10 minutes but lately I just shove it under the fire grate, light it and forget it about it. It gets me a real nice even fire. I think because its alcohol based it doesn't need air to keep burning and has a life of about 15 minutes before its completely burnt out. I just set the draft drawer to and daisy wheel according to what dome temp im shooting for and leave it for about 10 minutes before I put the meat on.
