I have a friend who is heading out to Kansas City and St. Louis on a baseball roadtrip. I told him I would seek recommendations for BBQ and beer joints in those cities from the Eggsperts.

I found one previous recommendation on the forum for 17th St Bar & Grill, in O'Fallon, IL. Any others?

A great trip in Kansas City is to hit the original Arthur Bryant's before a Royals game. It is an easy drive from the restaurant to the stadium.

A few others in KC worthy of a stop are Fiorelli's Jack Stack, Oklahoma Joe's, and my personal favorite, The Smokehouse in Gladstone. These are strictly my opinion - there are hundreds of BBQ joints in KC and many have loyal followings.

Fidel hit the great ones, Gates is pretty good too, I love their sauce.

In St. Louis, have them try Pappy's near St. Louis University, it is damn good bbq too.

Hopefully your buddy will bring the Royals luck.
  • If your friend is already going to be downtown he can try a couple of bbq places. The closest to the stadium is The Old Rock House which is at 1200 S. 7th. The chef there used to work for Supersmokers and makes some very good sauces.
The other place is Smoking Joes at 1901 Washington St which isn't far from the stadium but it's more of a drive than a walk. It new but getting good reviews.

The last time I was at the original Arthur Bryants I saw a big roach run across the counter where the food was being prepared. We left without eating. I concur on Gates in KC. Super smokers is pretty good. It's out by Six Flags. Good luck to all. Tom
  • I have to agree that Gates is a sure hit. They got a lot of locations in the KC area and represent KC bar b q

Pappy's at 3106 Olive in St. Louis has been getting very good reviews as of late, but I can't speak from experience. They are adamant about not serving leftovers from the previous day, and the result is sometimes they run out of 'Q near the end of the day, so I'd plan for lunch.

I also like a local chain here called Bandana's. I can't say I've ever had a bad rib there. They have locations all over the St. Louis area. I'd avoid a new place called "Rib City"...we ate there a couple of months ago, and I'd swear my ribs had been smoked over a burning tire.

I would suggest the original 17th Street Bar in Murphysboro IL, the owner has a history of wins in Memphis.

I just watched my Rays shut out KC 9-0 in the Trop at St Pete. But I have a sweet spot for KC as I watched my first major league game in KC, the A's before they were Oakland A's.
  • We know about your Rays up here in Boston!
