Broken Pizza Stone

Any Idea what would cause a Pizza Stone to crack into 4 pieces? I used it when I did a slow and low Boston Butt last weekend. I left it in the Egg and when I went to get it out a few days later it was in pieces in the tin foil? Any thoughts?

Squeeze,[p]How thick is your stone? Is it a BGE stone?[p]My first stone was less that 1/2" thick, and it broke the first time it saw high temps. But what is strange about your story is that you say you were doing a low 'n slow. Was this the first time you used the stone?[p]Give us some more details . . . [p]TRex

    Squeeze,
I think my first one cracked/split when I threw it (cold) into a hot egg, or there were some drippings that spilled on it. Whatever caused it, was my fault....it was a middle of the road stone, moneywise.[p]I still use it as extra ceramic mass for indirect cooks, I just don't have to worry about "saving" it anymore. TRex,
No, this was not the first time I used it. I wonder if it is because I kept it in the Egg. We had a few nights where the temp got down to around 55. Wonder if that may have done it? The stone was one that you can get at Linnens adn Things, not too expensive I think. [p]-Kevin

Squeeze,[p]I broke 2 pizza stones in the first 3 weeks I owned my LBGE.
I've since purchased a plate setter and a BGE pizza stone and haven't had any problems since...[p]Ryan

    Ryan,
Good thought. I think buying the BGE pizza stone is the only route to follow. It's a little spendy, but it's a much better product. As is the platesetter. That is a heck of a piece of ceramic, well worth the investment.[p]Mike in MN

    Squeeze,
I doubt that leaving your stone in the egg for several days had anything to do with it breaking and the 55° lows that you mention should not cause a problem. I think that it is the quality of the stone you had. Get yourself a BGE stone and, if you do pizzas, a BGE plate setter. The plate setter is also very useful for indirect cooks. Both of these can take LOTS of heat without breaking.
