XL maiden voyage - lump performance

Didn't want to add to the customer service thread...

I'll be posting results from the XL maiden voyage sometime this weekend. I know that I'll be using more lump than I would on any of my other cooks. I use more lump in the L than in the S, and I know I'll use more in the XL than I would in the L. The XL is a big old piece of of ceramic, and I'm sure to get that mass heated up to the point where it'll hold the temp (I'm only shooting for 250° on it for now...) will take a bit of fuel. That's OK, because I won't be in a hurry to get something cooked. There's the L and S for that.

The charcoal grate I got has some really small holes in it, perhaps smaller than the holes on the S or L grates, so I think I'll be fine when it comes to losing bigger chunks through the grate.

While I'm at it, I'm sure that I'll figure out something I'll need from the Ceramic Grill Store. If anyone has input and feedback on some nice XL accessories, I'm all ears :)

  • Beanie-Bean,

I love the XL hanger from the ceramic grill store. In doing L&S, I get better results over using the plate setter. I use an old deep dish pizza pan as my indirect piece. It is pretty inexpensive but works like a champ. I suppose the air flow is just better than the plate setter...

    Enjoy!

Dude, you are living large with all them eggs....no wait, you're living EXTRA LARGE.....

The XL is my preferred egg but then my toy selecton is a little more extensive than other eggheads. If I did not need the large egg for CGS, I'd sell it, that's how much I like my XL set-up. Just one guy's opinion!

Do you have any other EGGS ? If not why did you choose the XL ? I am considering an XL as well. The advice I get is that the Large might be better for me. I am still inclined to the XL. Enjoy the EGGSPERIENCE.

I am with you T, I love the XL a lot of people don't talk highly of them but then again most of those people don't even have an XL. I use the XL and the large about the same amount but wouldn't mind having another large. I got to get some of your toys soon.

I am really not trying to be rude here, but if you have already made up your mind, why keep asking for advice?

IT takes more fuel to fill it and it will use more of the fuel. With proper temp control the extra can be limited, but you will still use up more.

GTIPROD, There is certainly nothing wrong with an XL, It is an awesome grill. The advice you get here is from experienced Eggers, some of them have been around many years. Each individuals cooking needs are different as you can see. The forum has offered up configurations and experience so that you are not just limited to a single level grid and to help you make the right choice. The XL would be over kill for a family of 4 that uses the Egg as most other grills are used. If you feel that the XL is going to fit your needs by all means go with the XL. It is a great grill. I am fortunate to have a XL and a Large and will be getting another Large. The XL fits what I do more often than not but at the same time a lot can be done on the large. TJV has offered you to call him to discuss the sizes of the Eggs, I recommend that you do just that. Good luck with your decision you will be happy with what ever you get.

It will be interesting to hear your thoughts after the weekend. I know the initial fill will take more lump but I wonder how much lump will be used with and individual cook. I guess the 'refil' will tell all.

I'll be really happy to get things going tomorrow. I am thinking some pork butt to kick things off the right way. I've had a Pit Viper adaptor for the XL for over a year now, because I thought that I was getting the XL last year. Good ol' IRS had other intentions for my money instead. Another story...

I'm thinking that the fan will be at 50% instead of the normal 33% I use on the LBGE and 25% I use on the SBGE when cooking with the DigiQ. Will let you know how the settings work out on that.

I experience the same results with the large and spider set up.
