Small vs Medium

I have an XL and am thinking about adding either a Med or Small. I would like to have the flexibility to take the new egg on trips.

I am sure either one works great but curious about your opinions on the med vs small. When at the store, the Med did not look much bigger in grill grate diameter. It weighs 95 pounds and the small is 65.

I am going to use this for travel, as an appetizer grill to compliment my XL and will likely want to use it when I am just going to grill something quick for the family.

My old Weber gasser has seen better days and I am trying to convince the wife another egg is better than replacing the gasser. I rarely use it but it is good to keep stuff warm or quickly grill hot dogs and stuff...

Anyway, let me know your experience about the small vs medium.

Thanks,
BHD

I have a large and just got a small. Love it and travels very well. I think the biggest difference is the med will hold more lump and cook longer if needed. I simply don't need longer cooks with the small. Thinkin my next will me a mini :woohoo:

If your looking to travel with it then I would go with the small. Not to hard to handle and easier to transport. I have a Large, small, and just added a mini. I still take the small camping with us.

i have a large and small, when on trips i take the large. its really what you want to do with it and how convienient it is for you to move it. ive got no problems moving my large and i like to do bigger cooks like turkeys and butts when camping. i rigged out my 4 wheeler to put it anywhere i want

It will depend on what is most important to you. The decision is the additional 30# vs cooking area and lump capacity.

  • Agreed Grandpas Grub...

I appreciate the feedback. Although I agree that transporting the small would be easier, I think I am leaning towards the medium for the extra grid space..95% of the time, it will be used at home.

That may all change when I find out the delta between the prices!

    Thanks!

Don't let the price difference be the deciding factor. If you decide on the medium then wait until you have the money if that is an issue.

All the eggs "can" be transported. The question is are you going to. Some on the forum take an egg with them every time they go out. Pork Butt Mike and other campers will have good advice.

I started with a large and have all the other sizes down.

I am now thinking of selling the medium and/or small.

I haven't used and XL. But, doing it all over again, I would first get a large, then mini and then if I needed another egg it would most likely be another large.

For the wife and I and maybe 2 or 3 grand kids I love the mini.

If I am cooking anything longer than 4 hours or L&S I go to the large.

One more consideration, there is a huge advantage to have a second egg for cooking at different temperatures or cooking for larger groups. It is nice to have extra grid space and be able to cook at different temperatures.

If I plan my meal the large will cook enough for all 25 or so. I have also used all 4 eggs fully loaded for the same group.

    Heck it's only money.

I have a large a small and a mini. Your first initial post said you were looking for a second cooker for appetizer grill and for travel. I find the small quite useful and lately tend to use if more than my large when it is just my wife and me. The small will surprise you with its usefulness and the amount of food you can cook on it.
Good luck with your choice--by the way, there is no wrong choice.

i have the large small combo and i wish i would have gotten the med

because i don't take it with me as much as i thought i would.. and the extra space would be nice..

    hope this helps

I just recently went through this same process and had to make the same hard decision. I have a large and wanted a travel egg. I ended up with the medium for the grid space. I took it to Talladega for the race at the end of April and it worked great. I built a cube for it to sit in and put some large handles on it. Two people can move it. Medium in my opinion is the way to go.
  • I have thought about this same question. One of the factors that I have considered is the availability of accessories for the medium versus the small. I believe there are more variety with the medium.
