new greenie,[p]I've found it works best to do it immediately, not leaving the top up for any length of time.

new greenie,[p]I've always lit my lump from the top. Usines one of the sawdust and wax starters. Kinda make a little hole inch or so deep start the cube and once it's lit gently put a couple of pieces over the flames. Then usually I have about 15 minutes to get stuff ready. Some of the folks use MAPP gas Like a Bill Gates product - 10 ways to accomplish the same movement! Your learning curve will be fast and fun and use the forum to make it faster and more fun. Good luck!

new greenie,[p]I usually fill with lump, make a small depression in the center, add one Weber starter cube, put a couple pieces of lump over the flaming cube, then close the lid and open both vents. No need to keep the lid open at all while it comes up to temps.[p]Welcome!

Sundown,[p]"10 ways to accomplish the same movement"[p]Ahh...now that reminds me of my late Uncle Wilfred..he sure was a nice guy...course every now and then he'd blow his nose directly into the bathroom sink..you see somthing like that..and you don't eat no grapes for a long time..[p]Over time Uncle Wilfred got to doing some rather strange things..we sure was worried bout his state of mind..most especially when he was found hangin round the outhouse too often..and then..the most strange thing happened....my brother Chris "Big Butt" Bouchardie..was out in the outhouse..havin somewhat of a struggle..it seems..(although truth be told it ain't out of the ordinary to see Chris going to the outhouse..all bowlegged ..carrying a giant pair of scissors..with the express purpose of seperating himself from a rather unordinarily large offending item)..when out of the blue..and at the most inopportune time..Chris heard a giant gasp..followed by the voice of Uncle Wilfred ..exclaiming..."righteous...it's like a babies arm!"..causing Chris to cut his visit short..and rush outside of the outhouse..to find Uncle Wilfred sitting there..a notebook in hand..scribbling like you read about...peering into a tiny hole he had made in the side of the outhouse...ahh..it was quite a sight..I am told.[p]Chris..quickly snatched the notebook out of Wilfreds hand..and started looking into what was written..and there..in the pages of this unique diary..were scribbled..pictures of the faces..of..every member of the family..and I can tell you grampa musta been having a heck of a time..cause his picture looked just like that time he was chokin on that ham hock..and there was also a picture of Beulah..eyes poppin out like a stepped on peeptoad..and beside the pictures..were scribbled notes about certain things..that I dare not mention...seems Wilfred had begun a diary on the movements of the entire family.[p]I can tell you..from my recollection of that there.diary..not only is Wilfred a great artist..but..that there are indeed..more than 10 ways to accomplish the same movement..most especially if'n you count the pictures I seen of poppa..who apparently..due to his love of bran..could have filled the entire diary..and we now know who done bent the outhouse door...sometimes you look at gramma and she seems so frail..but sometimes..like they say..the strength comes from within..in times of trouble...[p]
Ahh..the life of a Stump..[p]StumpBaby

StumpBaby,
I sure have missed your stories - welcome back!

new greenie,[p]You should always close the lid after starting (I use a MAPP torch ... overkill perhaps, but VERY effective). [p]Anyway, you want the "chimney effect" of the egg ... heat in a chimney makes a draft, which pulls in more air, which makes the fire burn hotter, which delivers more heat to the chimney which makes more draft and so on.
