have a friend who has offered to sell me his 2 year old guru competitor rig. I think the competitor is the older style, but i just have one large Big green egg.

asking around 100 bucks, are these worth it to the average cooker?

i could see it be helpful on overnight cooks, which i personally have not tried.

but i wanted some expert opinion.

thanks

yes i love mine.. the problem you will come across is the competetor is not water resistant like the digi q is... but that is a very easy problem to over come

    101_0425.jpg

also if you get another egg you can do something a little diffrent

i love my guru the nex one is nice and the even newer one is even nicer but the competetor is the one i have and use often ;)

YES! I love my DigiQ. It takes a lot of worry off of your mind. Makes it very easy to keep a consistant temp for long periods of time. You still have to setup your firebox correctly, but after that, it really is a "set it and forget it" solution.

    interesting....

what is the best way to set up your firebox and start the process with the competitor?

    - do you hook everything up , and then start the fire, say in the middle of your ring, and then let the blower take over?

    - do you set and light your fire the old fashion way, then get it around 250 degreees, then set the competitor and probes in...

    i have no clue....thanks everyone!

Keep in mind it's used, probe conditions - not sure if probes wear out over time or not. Also, the new units have more features and can control lower temperatures.

The Competitor will do the job well and a lot of people love theirs.

If there is a chance you think you might get the DigiQ2 at some point in time, unless you need two units I would get the q2 first.

The small size of the q2 is really nice plus being able to read the temperatures is a great feature. There are a host of other improvements in the newer models.

Which every you decision you make you will enjoy having a powered vent system. I don't use it as much as I thought I would but I wouldn't give it up.

Just some things to think about.

also make sure the probes are the newer "heat" resistant.. if they are they are wire braided!!! if they are not you might want to call bbq guru and get the upgrade it is well worthit...

forgot about the probes kent thanks for reminding me

Sounds like a good deal to me. I use the DigiQII with a turboGrate in my LBGE, Just lite it wait for temp to reach 350-400 put on meat and set guru and wait.

    Good Luck

I am not sure about the probes, for the Q2 I think they are about $30 each.

You have the Competitor, what would be a fair price for a used one in your opinion? I have always had the problem of wanting the newest & latest (and new).

thanks for all the info...one concept question...how does the unit ensure that the egg does not overshoot the requested temp?

is it because now it is a "closed" system, and if the blower did not work, the fire would just "go" out?

yea you just close the daisey wheel a little more closed than you would regularly want it.. that way you are "Smothering" the fire and it is the guru's job to blow enough air in to keep the fire going and the temps stable

i bought mine 6 months before the digiq came out i was a little pi$$ed at first but i am a used car guy so the newest is not always the best to me ;)

hundred bucks sounds about right if it is the 4cfm fan and a little low to me if it is the 10 cfm fan

I couldn't decide between the Competitor and the Stoker. I noticed the posts on the Guru web site about the new DigqQII and got in on one of the first shipments for the q2.

I ended up getting the Stoker too.

I had the fire go out using the q2 - vertical burn. Since then I always light in multiple spots.

Both the stoker and q2 have their advantages.

Vintage cans on ebay for 5 bucks.
    http://shop.ebay.com/items/charles chips can?_dmd=1&_sop=12

Were those delivered to your house years ago? Heard they were out of PA originally, but had opened up a second plant in Kentucky.

I remember it well. I could shovel them chips away as a youngun.

that was a question i had...how many places should i light?
  • Grandpas Grub
    Grandpas Grub Posts: 14,226
If I use starter cubes, I break them in half and start in 3 to 4 places. 3, 6, 9 o'clock and sometimes center.

If oil/paper napkin, I start in 2 places, left and right of center.

    MAPP 3 places.

I just want the egg stabilizing quicker.

    However, 2 places is fine.
