Charcoal grate starting to break

I cleaned out the large this afternoon to bake some bread. when I lifted the grate from the bottom it made a weird ching sound. Upon investigation I found the grate was cracked about 1/3 across.

Queston is when it does break, is there a better grate for the bottom or go back with original?

Is this something that is covered by warranty? :huh:

I've had a couple crack and have had them covered under warranty. The position now with the firebox, firering and grate is that they will replace if unusable.

I think the dealer has a lot to do with it. I was talking to a guy from the Canadian distributor today and their position is...if you aren't happy we'll replace it.

If you want to try something different I use a Lodge Trivet. My grate has a big bulge in it, probably from high temp use. Don’t know the physics but it is bowed upwards.
Searched the forum and found out about the Lodge Trivet.
Pluses are that it fits with a little air gap around the edges seems to have a good airflow and gives the ash a place to exit.. The minus is that it will tip over when you are cleaning out the charcoal.
From what I’ve read the original grate must have been ceramic and the iron one is an upgrade.

Willie, I saw that same trivet at Bass Pro. I wondered if it would work. Before I started cooking this afternoon, I measured the grate so I could see if it was the same diameter as the trivet. My only concern was if it was heavy enough to handle the heat. thanks for the info.

Ross, I've seen the videos on youtube. I thought about those too. I just haven't seen them much on here.
Is it better than the stock grate with regard to even heating and how long it lasts?
