1st Pork Butt Run
coleslaw
Posts: 7
Details:
Large egg
8.5# butt
CharCrust rub
Lump charcoal-2/3 to capacity
Platesetter
Drip pan
Ill start by saying it turned out great.
I started the fire and got it stabilized (250) around 7:00pm. I put the butt on and checked on the temp continuously until about 1:00am.
I got up before work and checked the temp. THE COALS WENT OUT...Egg was still slightly warm but wouldnt fire up again so I opened the lid and discovered my charcoal was spent. I re-stocked the charcoal, re-fired the egg, got it stabilized, and went to work. By the time i got home at 6:00, the egg was at under 200.
End result: a kick-ass boston butt.
Question: what can i do do keep the fire going for a 24 hour smoke? Fill it more? Use the biggest lumps?

Hey coleslaw, glad to hear that your first butt came out great :woohoo: You seam to be getting the hang of the egg fast
You can fill that egg with lump and cook for 30hrs.Just fill it to the top of the firering
BTW:Welcome to the club :cheer: -
There is not need to cook a butt for 24 hours. Keep trhe dome at 250 and that butt would have been done in 12 - 16 hours.
That butt should have been close to done in the morning. If that temp of that butt was less than 140 when you got up you were lucky you did bot poison yourself
Fill level with the bottom of the fire ring and you should have plenty -
"Fill level with the bottom of the fire ring and you should have plenty" ... that is if he has a good gasket seal.
