Spring Band Question

I have been looking at pictures of Eggs on the forum and I have a question. My spring band has two indentations in the front to line up the spring band on the center of the Egg. Is this normal or does it mean my Egg is older? I got it from a family friend and did not ask the age.

I Got a new band for a large and medium in the last couple months and they no longer have the little tips that line it up.

my earliest one had pins and was made in mexico, the newest have nothing, i think that one is in between and maybe made in the us. is the handle bolted to the band, my mexican was welded to the bandfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Bolted! -
youve got the better band, the mexican one had really wimpy springs which eventually fail

I got this one back in '04 I think it was a older one when I got it? It was a display model so I really not sure how long it had been there.

that one looks like my mexican band, see where the handle is welded to the band. dont know if all were made in mexico that way but i do remember alot of people were having problems with them. you're one of the lucky ones if it was trouble free. i think they had a few design changes going on at that time because it was difficult getting the right springs for replacement, in the end they sent me a grab bag full of all different sized springs to fix minefukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

In these pics the top band appears to have, for lack of a better term, outward dimples. Mine actually recess and fit into an indention in the ceramic itself. -
those outbound dimples are the back side of a drive pin that sticks about a quarter inch inside the band. i think they weere having problems with people not lining them up correctly and the pins were chipping large segments of ceramic off the egg during assemblyfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

yep on the inside it has little tips/pins that go in a hole that is drilled in the base and dome to help line them up. The new bands no longer have the pins.

frankie482,
My first one had welded pins instead of dimples. There was a recess in the ceramic to accept the pins. That was an older style that had no springs and a locking lever to hold the dome open. When I replaced those bands a couple of years later there were no pins or dimples. My original is about 12 years old. I would expect yours would be the early version of the spring assisted dome.

No trouble whatsoever. I only use this egg for high temp cooks anymore. It has been fired up atleast 4 times a week since I got it. Only thing is it is one of the funny drilled thermometer holes. But not a problem for me.

Gasket is all but gone and has been for quiet a time but no issues.
