for smoking?I lost what I believe to be a plum tree this morning and wonder if it is any good for smoke flavor?I also lost a good size chunk of a pear tree(I think). It's not a fruit producing tree, but I have others that do produce and they look the same.Any help would be appreciated, thanks I really hate to lose trees in my yard :( Might as well get some use from them

Are you sure that they are not crabapple trees?

I know the felling. It looks like loosing part of that one was inevitable. :(

No,I'm not,the second tree(last two pics) could be anything I have a few crabapple trees though, but they produce a bunch of fruit. This one doesn't.The first tree(with the red leaves)has fruit that is plumb colored, and shaped, just smaller(like grape size)

Cool, thanks Gene. Now if I can just figure out if it is a plumb tree :P
-
Yea Eddie,the 50+mph winds didn't help either

I would make sure what kind of wood it is before using. You should have a state extension office in your county that can give you a definitive answer as to the type wood you have.My uncle has crabapple trees that look just like what is in your pics.I really cannot tell but you may just use it in an outdoor firepit or chimena.Better safe than sorry.I do understand your desire to not let good smoking wood go to waste.Just make sure what you have there.

Thanks Hoss,I'll get my tree expert buddy over here before I start burnin it in my eggs

That was some nasty stuff that blew through today. The worst of it went North of us.

The ones you refer to as having grape sized fruit are probably wild plums. They should be OK. I would research the other one.Just MHO.

Yes it was man.I was very happy to see that all I lost was a few trees, and my "Sparky's Smokehouse" sign :( At least the smokehouse survived :cheer: :woohoo:
-
Thanks Hoss,I've cut into the fruit before, and it looked just like a plumb(only smaller) I will ask my friend first though
-
cut some up and dry it...havent used plum but lost a pear tree and saved wood from it..wasnt sure how it would be...imparts a nice subtle smoke and I would think plum would be similar...
-
Through the pics, I thought it was a "purple leaf plum"

Sparky,
Something tells me there might be another tree stump steakfry coming up!

Plum is fantastic smoking wood! Before I cooked with the pear wood I would make sure it is a fruit tree.

I am glad you say that. I will have to cut down a nice Pear tree soon which is leaning badly from a past Hurricane. I will save the wood an cut into chunks. The squirrels and my dogs are not going to be happy. They love my pears.

Hi Doug, my brother in law lost a plum tree a few years ago and I was lucky enough to get some before he disposed of it as only farmers can.
I dried the wood naturally for about 2 years and started smoking with it last year. I use it on pork primarily, in place of apple wood, but have used it with salmon also. I find it gives a nice fruity flavour and is not over powering.
Plum is also good for wood turning, my dad did some nice pieces from plum wood many years ago and they still look good, we oil them every few years to help preserve the wood, and stop it cracking from getting too dry in the house.
Greetings from Ireland, Roger
