Replace the felt gasket on my egg?

It's egg-maintenance time in the Clapton house and I was wondering if and when I should replace the felt gasket on my three-year-old egg. It's not frayed, worn, or brittle and I seem to be getting a good seal. But the felt is rock-hard and the lid comes down with a hard clunk and not a soft thud, the way it did when it was new. Thoughts? Thanks.

I'd just leave it be. The felt will compact and get hard from heat and grease but that's the nature of the material with use over time. Your getting some good mileage outa the gaskets.

when the gaskets don't keep the smoke in, they will also be allowing air to enter. if they leak, you won't easily maintain temperature. i just replaced gaskets on a large and a small. the large went six years but they were really toasted.

If it passes the dollar bill test, don't do a thing.
