more than 2 butts at once??

edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I have cooked two approx. 8lb pork butts on my large egg in the past and noticed I needed to increase the cooking time from around 18 - 19 hours to around 24 hours.

Just wondering if anyone has tried three at once ( it would be tight ) and if so how long did it take ??

The most I've been able to fit is 5. Four up them upright and one on top. The dome was maxed out and the cook probably took about 3 hours longer than normal. The time was 17 hours. I just did 4 last night and it came out to be a 15 hour cook. Pork butts are funny creatures. You always have an idea what it's going to take but once you plan it that way, well, it either finishes real early or real late. I always figure a 4 to 5 hour buffer for when I need them done.

If it take 24 hours to cook pork butt you have the temp too low.

Maintain 250 dome. I cooked 38 butts on 7 eggs thursday and friday and I can tell you it did not take 24 hours.

If you leave an air gap between butts, it shouldn't take THAT much longer to add one or two more butts. the last time I cook 4 butts, it took about 20 hours and the dome was at 230. Good luck!

  • When it took 24 hours for two I had the dome temp around 215 to 230 most of the cook. When I got them off the grill they were two of the best I had ever done. I used a digital therm and the internal temp was right at 200..

Some of the pics were great. Thanks to the answers.... I will go for three.
