Rib Membrane - pulling off
Misippi Egger
Posts: 5,095
After the lengthy discussion on the pros and cons of leaving the membrane on the ribs, now comes the question:
"What's your best trick for getting the membrane off?"
1) Many recommend using a paper towel to assist.
2) I bought a pair of catfish skinners at Wally World and it is "Da Bomb" for pulling the membrane!
Sorry, for the 'Yanks'
who might not can find those in your Wal Marts. Ya know we don't wear shoes down here and don't fool with hooks and poles, we just hand grapple our catfish (Latin: Stupideous Fishermaious). :woohoo: :silly: :woohoo:

Paper towel works for me-
-
HA!!! I am not the only one
I thought of that after the membarne kept tearing. I thought for a second and it was off to the tackle box. Works like a champ.
-
Yeah, I prefer to just use paper towels. Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Strongsville, OhioYes. I own a blue egg! Call Atlanta if you don't believe me![I put this here so everyone knows when I put pictures up with a blue egg in it]

AZRP introduced a method, which to me, is far superior: Use a kitchen knife to separate the membrane in the middle of the rib. Once you get a finger hold there, work your fingers, then your hands under the membrane until you get to the other side. Then using both hands, work your way to the ends, Works for me.

A catfish skinner??? Do they sell those down in FL? Never heard of it but I am off to a bait and tackle shop to find out. If they don't, the paper towel works for me.

Best membrane removal tool ever!
How was the weather down there today/nite?They had us scared to death up here but it was'nt that much to it.A lot of TV personality weathermen were predicting armegeddon!!! You know that has to be the perfect job.You can be wrong 360 days out of the year and still be a celebrity and take home six figures!!! :woohoo: :woohoo:
 -
You should be golden in Florida, Faith. They will have them at WalMart, Academy Sports and most tackle shops.
-
This is how I do it. Thumb and fore finger under the membrane.

Same with the other hand. Then pull opposite directions.
Continue to pull until membrane is removed. -RP
-
Grip it and rip it, baby.
-
Bob, With these skinners, you just grab the edge of the membrane on one end and in one pull it usually comes of in one big piece.

Yeah, on the way to work this morning on SuperTalk MS radio, they were reading the Nat'l Weather Svc. reports of softball-sized hail coming our way from TX. ! All we got way a little rain and some mild wind.
Kinda brisk wind out there now - just took the granddog out - predicting 49 low tonight (Brrr) and 48 tomorrow night. 20-30 mph winds. no rain. ALso saying lows of 35-37 early next week. Guess I have to cover my newly planted tomatoes! -
Pretty slick !
-
Do you do the cut out milk jug trick? :woohoo:
-
Man,you know better than to plant tomatoes before GOOD FRIDAY!!!
-
Yeah, yeah, heard that before !! Always seem to get burned when I rush things.
Last year I didn't get planted until July, so had a crappy crop.
I live in town, so can't really have a big a** garden. I have 2 plants in an Earth Box (shouldn't be hard to cover for the cold). Thinking about some other things in the other two Earth boxes, but haven't decided yet. Basil for sure, maybe try to get some Rosemary going in one of the beds next to the house.
Last year the Princess fell for/bought the Topsy Turvy upside down tomato thingie you see advertised on TV. Never found something strong enough to hold them (if you call NOW, you get 2 for $19.95) as they can get up to 30 pounds. Gonna work on that this spring. -
I love it! I can't help but get "antsy "too!!!
Remember,NEVER plant anything you can't protect until it has been 80 degrees 3 days in a row.Nite temps of 60 and above are even better.I know I'm preachin to the choir, but maybe some newbies can benefit from the post.

Clark,
I have the tried the catfish skinner, but I prefer the AZRP way. With the skinner I get tears. -
I have probably done 10000 lbs of ribs over the years and the finger under the membrane works. God's tool is always perfect.

Hey, us Yanks don't have Catfish but we do have Horned Pout, which are a smaller relative. They are good eating as well. Haven't had one in years. The pond across the street from me is full of them.
-
i use a drill bit in my cordless drill. wrap the free end of the membrane on it, hit the power button, and it strips it in one second, winding it around the drill bit. i can do 25 slabs of ribs in a minutes and a half.

I can quit for today. I've learned something NEW.
-
Oh yeah? Well you just try getting some lutefisk down there in the South! :woohoo:
-

All ribs have one. From these bison ribs, to lamb ribs.
Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
I looked that up, as I had NO IDEA what lutefisk was. I think I ruined my appetite for lunch.

Fish saponified in lye! I don't think so! :(
Youse guys can keep that up there above the "sweet tea" line.
I think I'm gonna have some good ole fried Mississippi catfish for lunch. :woohoo:
