  • Ryan,
no 'seasoning' necessary. . ..fire her up, and start cookin. . . couple of bits of advice. . .[p]1. don't believe what you read about a 'couple of handfuls' of lump. . .fill it with lump to at least above the holes in the side of the firebox. ..i typically go almost all the way to the bottom of the fire ring. . .even if you don't need that much, when you shut down the vents, the fire snuffs quickly and you will have the remaining lump for the next fire. . .[p]2. when you first get it going, experiment with the vents (i assume you got a daisy wheel top). ..for most cooking, you will find that you need very little vent opening on the bottom, and then tweak your temps with the top vent. . .for instance, to achieve and stay in the 350 degree range, i let the fire get going up to about 400 with the vents wide open, then shut down the bottom vent to about one inch and adjust with the daisy wheel from there. ..for low temps (250 range), i have the bottom vent closed to about a credit car width, and again, fine tune with the daisy wheel. .. .it takes a little practice, but it is not hard. ..[p]3. start with chicken. ..it is very condusive to big fluctuations with temps, and you will still get great results. . .burgers are excellent, but won't give you much in terms of 'practice' with the temps. . . [p]4. read this forum. . .if you can think of it, there is probably a recipe for it somewhere here, or log on and say, 'hey i bought this food, now how do i cook it", and you will get plenty of advice. . .[p]5. read the naked whiz's site about backflash, then do trex steaks (high temp sear, rest then dwell). . .you will never eat a steak out again. . .[p]6. have fun. . .you won't beleive how good the food is, and don't hesitate to experiment. .. i have basically tried everything i ever do in the oven or on the stove, now in the egg, usually with little modification, but with great results almost every time. . .[p]

Ryan, the short answer is "no". However, after 4 or 5 cooks its will be well seasoned. And actually, a light coating of olive oil on the grill itself will keep food from sticking as much but it is not absolutely necessary.
