Very first use

I just took delivery of my BGE and am excited to use it. Does the grill need any special procedure before the first use? Maybe a long, hot burn to burn off any manufacturing residue?

Or can I just get to cooking?

Thanks!

This is what I did when I got my LBGE the Christmas b4 last. Clean the surfaces that you will cook on with soap and water. Do 5 or 6 low temp cooks 350* or less to make sure the gaskets seat and you should be good to go. Welcome to Eggdom and good luck and good eggin'. :)

I went straight to cooking but kept the first few times down to 350° or so. Some people suggested that the gaskets need a break-in period, so that is what I did. My gaskets are still fine: hard, thin, but fine.
You will be fine and good luck on the first cook.

Welcome to the Green Side!! :) Don't be shy, sign up. As for the cook, take it slow. Use the search function and look for first cooks, initial cooks, etc... You might want to try a dry run the first time to make sure you have the temp control down. Calibrate your thermometer. Don't forget the adult beverage to celebrate.

Have at it! Some here will advise to do several low temp (below 400 or so) before taking the Egg to searing temps in order to allow the gasket to "cure." I've never really bought into that theory, but it certainly can't do any harm if you choose to go that way. Got a meal planned? If not, spatchcock chicken is really easy and really good. The Naked Whiz's site has a LOT of really good information to help you get started, including instructions for spatchcock chicken. Come here often for great information and great recipes. Get going and have fun!!
  • My first cook was an 18 hour pair of Boston Butts. Seasoned the Egg real good. And the Butts were fine too.

We just picked up our medium egg tonight. I'm going to build a table for it this weekend and then put it together. So, if all goes well, our first use will most likely be Saturday or Sunday,I can't wait!

I got a XL BGE in Dec 2008, did 3 cooks w/ low to medium temp. no issues, great meals! but when going for high temps for steaks after 2 times gasket came off and burnt on left hand side. I hope you do not have the same issue but just want to let you know. I have other ceramic cookers and would have used them for high temps and save BGE for medium to low temps. For first cook - I would do hamburgers at medium temp. I think you will really see the different from ceramic cookers vs. metal/gas grills. Good luck and enjoy
  • Thanks very much for all the info!

I let it run for a while at a high-ish temp then backed it down & did some marinated chicken breasts at 350. Best outdoor chicken I'd ever made. Even had the neighbors over.

I think this thing is gonna be great!
