  • If you try to lift it by one of it's top fronds, and the frond breaks, i.e. can't hold the weight of the pineapple-she's ready! Scott

Pick it up and smell the bottom, a good ripe one will have plenty of pineapple smell. -RP

And just a touch soft on the bottom, also

When in Hawaii many years ago, the produce folks showed me that if you pull a couple of the top leaves and they come out easily, they were ready.

not so much as breaks, but comes out.

should be heavy, smell pine-apply, and have a little give to the surface (softer rather than really hard).

    i actually like them a little over-ripe.

My upgrade is that you should try to pull out the leaves that are on the inside ring of leaves. Ideally the leaf comes out easily. Think in terms of not being able to move the pineapple as opposed to not being able to lift it. Pineapples come in different colors from green to yellow. When I am looking for a good one, I start with the ones that have more yelow color.

As a small bit of trivia - a pineapple is a bromeliad (nice flower sort of thing that is similar to an orchid. They do not ripen after picking, so make a good selection and go ahead and use it.
