My Thought of the day, #2 : Snuffing the fire and temp control

I've noticed that even when snuffing the fire, which goes pretty quickly, I'm still finding that I'd like it to go out more quickly, especially after a high temp cook.[p]It seems sometimes the lump burns for a long while after (or maybe I'm too cheap and want it to die quicker!).[p]Has anyone considered a felt gasket for the ceramic top? It'd seat that much better (mine's farily good), and would really prevent any leaking of air.[p]Secondly, is there any way to really seal the lower vent better? Seems the ash from cleaning-out can't be helping, as it fills up the slide-track which the cover rides in. Could a really thin gasket of (what?) felt, maybe be applied to the back-sde of the thing? These two modifications would really help to seal this baby to infiltration.[p]As it is, I think my gasket is fine. The egg's about 7 months old or so.[p]Whatddaya think?

    stike,
"Has anyone considered a felt gasket for the ceramic top? It'd seat that much better (mine's farily good), and would really prevent any leaking of air."[p]I tried it, but the glue on the chimney top would melt and the gasket would move. I never tried it on the under side of the rain cap because mine is so black. While it was on and working, I can't say I noticed any difference - that was about 4-5 cooks. [p]Tim

    Tim M,
    Yeah
I'm thinking on the underside of the cap. Mine's still clean, miraculously.[p]I'd imagine the flame coming off an 800 degree sear would probably toast the gasket if we put it on the rim of the chimney.[p]What kind of felt did you use?

    stike,
There should be a layer of clear caulk between your stainless steel vent and the body of the egg. If there isn't, you can do it yourself with some high temp sealant.[p]TNW

    The Naked Whiz,
It's sealed, what I mean is the actual slidin' bit.[p]you know, there's a little ash in the groove, etc.[p]Can this thing be made tighter?
