This was an article from the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper.

The Business Section asked readers for ideas on

“How would you fix the economy?” One guy nailed it.

Dear Mr. President,

Patriotic retirement:

There’s about 40 million people over 50 in the work force;
Pay them $1 million apiece severance with stipulations:

1) They leave their jobs.

Forty million job openings. Unemployment fixed.

2) They buy new American car.

Forty million cars ordered. Auto industry fixed.

3) They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage.

Housing crisis fixed.

Yea, but that would cost $40 Trillion.

Not to mention the burden they would place on SSI, medicare, etc.

It isn't as easy as anyone might think to live for 30 years on a million bucks, especially after you pay for a new car and a house.

    Nice idea though.

Forty Trillion....isn't that what we just gave the )(#%*%$) banks?? :woohoo:
Ohh...if only it was so easy!! Nice thoughts though!! :woohoo:
  • Where does the 40 trillion come from? 40 million people each getting 1 million is 40 million. You are right about it would be tough trying to live for 30 years on a million, even if they were given 1 million without having to buy a house, new car, etc. We opened up a serious box with these bailouts. God help our kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

No...40 people getting a million each is 40 million.

    40,000,000 x 1,000,000 = 40,000,000,000,000

40 million people getting $1 (one dollar) a piece is $40 million. Gotta tack all the zeros on the end...like Fidel showed. Good concept though!
