Is my Gasket dying a slow death already?

As previously posted, I did my frist pizza last night.
My BGE had about 8 prior cooks. This was the first one at temps. over 500 degrees.
I took a look at the gasket this morning and I am wondering if this is something I need to worry about, repair etc.

Here are a couple of pics of the base gasket. It seems to be shrinking and burning up.

This is the dome gasket...

  • Actually that gasket looks pretty good. The biggest problem is if it falls off. That's a sign that the glue was faulty. Other than the gaps, I had on both the dome and base of mine, which is poor workmanship by the person who put it on in the first place it looks pretty good. Would be better to overlap then cut at a 45 degree angle across the width of the base. Personally I'd be happy with that gasket.

Yeap looks like your gasket is getting fried!!
When you did the pizza what was your set up? My egg is 4 years old and have yet to replace the gasket but when i do pizza i do bring it up as high as i can into the dome. That way the pizza plate does not deflect the intense heat directly to the gasket area.Just my 2 cents!! I have here my new ruthland that i will be installing sometimes this summer.
  • I had plate setter, legs down, and the pizza stone.
I also use parchment paper under the pie. The paper was a bit too big and was likely making contact with the sides and/or gasket. Excess paper burned up as the pie cooked. Maybe it cooked the gasket too!
  • Here is the set up. Did that cause the problem?

Paper would have done nothing to it but having the pizza stones directly at the gasket height, well that is what i would blame.Or did you cook directly on the platesetter? that also would be pretty much at the gasket level.

I would venture to say the parchment paper had nothing to do with it. The paper won't hold heat long enough to do much of anything.

It drives me crazy when BGE sends out an egg with gaps in the gasket like that. Just plain old sloppy work by an employee who doesn't care.

Those air gaps are a source of gasket failure, you can see the burning on the dome picture.

If it were me I would make a clean cut and put a splice in those gaps.

Other than the gaps your gasket looks in great shape (close to new).
