I was just wondering if the thermometer must be cleaned occasionally for it to remain accurate . I am new at this EGG stuff so don't make fun of my questions yet . I've had my large BGE for nine days and the steaks and chops are tasting pretty good . [p]P.S. Bt the way , this forum is awesome.

Terry on P.E.I,[p]Welcome to the green room. :~)[p]Nope, never had to clean the thermometer....... however I did move the clip, that secures the thermometer from the inside, to the outside..... which makes it easier to pull the therm for calibration or inserting another probe for monitoring a cook, or whatever.....[p]So, what does "...on P.E.I." stand for?[p]Cheers!

    Terry on P.E.I,
I agree with Woodoggies no need to clean, a periodic calibration is however recommended. I guess if it gets to the point where its gunked up enough you have a hard time pulling it out you may want to clean it, but other than that dont worry. I also have my clip on the outside and have had it there since day 1 ...there aint no way that therm is gonna fall outta that egg, no need to hold it in....Just my $.02¢[p]Wess

  • Terry on P.E.I,[p]If you're asking that because you feel it is currently not accurate...did you calibrate it? Thats about the only useful info with the book. Pair of pliers, boiling water...if it doesn't read 212, twist the nut on the back until it does. [p]Just a shot in the dark (aided by the fact that I did that very thing when I first got mine).

  • It stands for Prince Edward Island . It is a province on the east coast of Canada . It is a beautiful place to visit and an even better place to live . We are linked to New Brunswick(another province) by the 14km long Confederation Bridge.

Terry on P.E.I,[p]I had to look you up on the atlas..... looks like your island is it's very own province and only about 600 miles northeast from Philly.
You're in a part of the world I have yet to see..... and by the looks of the location, I'm sure it's beautiful.[p]Ask away, Terry...... all questions are welcome here......and happy cookin![p]John[p]

    WooDoggies,
While we're on the thermometer subject, how often do you feel the need to calibrate the thermometer?

Hey Shelby![p]Probably twice a year ...... either out of curiosity or if I twist the thermometer or if I feel it somehow got knocked out of kilter..... usually the latter.[p]For me the dome temp is for a general idea what is going on inside ...... so it's not so important that it be super accurate.
Sometimes I will use a polder to monitor the temp at grate level for the longer cooks and finish off that cook with the probe in the meat.

Mostly I use the thermapen for the shorter cooks.....
probably more info than you asker for! :~)[p]Hey, soft shell crabs happening down your way yet?[p]John[p]

Terry on P.E.I,[p]I use the clip with my Maverick Remote. It isn't necessary to hold it in the egg, so I use it to clip one of the Maverick remotes to my drip pan. Works wonderful! Oh ya, if you don't have a Polder or a Maverick, you might just as well get one of them (or 2) on your "must have" list....don't wait until Xmas! [p]The thermometer needs a regular calibration...as noted, like every time before a cook that temperature is an issue...again, I use that same clip to hold the thermometer in the pan of boiling water to hold the tip off the side or bottom of the pan.[p]Mike in MN

    WooDoggies,
Soft shells are always happening down here. There's a few folks who "farm" them almost year round! Such great eating.
Ever done them on the egg? If so, please email me details. I'll be gone for a week and won't see a post. Thanks!

  • WooDoggies,
I don't think you can get a much better place to visit , or live , but that is my own unbiased opinion . If you ever plan on a visit to the island let me know .[p] Terry
