We're currently without a dog, but were red doberman owners for 25 years. I want a smaller dog this time around. I'm looking breeds over and have always liked Welsh Terriers...They keep coming back to the top of the list.

Just looking for comments now, as a breeder search and a trip or two will be needed before summer.

Thanks

  • :( Is that Rosie???
Thought of her the other day when someone's dog was eyeing the twiced baked potatoes...
thought "hmm, Rosie is the only dog I've ever known who would NEVER venture that close!!!" ;)

Rosie did swipe some fresh ravioli one time, and of course she loved sneaking carrots from the garden.

That's Trudy in the picture....also a vegetable lover.

;) To a dog, anything on the ground (or in) is fair play :woohoo:

Just once? Can guess she stayed on her bed for a long time afterwards
  • Third Eye, I have a 13 yr old Welsh and I cannot begin to tell you what a great dog she is. I wouldn't have told you that when she was under a year old before she went with my wife to obedience training for 12 weeks instructed by the trainer for the NOPD K-9 team. The trainer told the entire class of rottweilers, dobermans, shepards, labradors and mix breed owners that Maggie is the toughest dog in the bunch but when trained she would be incredible, he was correct. I have raised beagles, boxers and rottweilers all very obedient breeds and breeds that want to please their owners. Then came Maggie the Welsh. She was on her own agenda which is what they are bred to be. They want to work on their own without pesky humans butting into their business. They are bred to hunt vermin and boy does she believe in doing her job. She is incredible with children from infants on up to adults. They are very strudy dogs for being 15 to 20 lbs. so they aren't easily bothered by little kids. If I could give you any advice it would be to get your Welsh trained, they are wonderful dogs once they know you are in charge. I hope this helps.

That's good to hear. Yes, I'm into obedience training (our local options are limited though) and like to get a head start by using some of the teachings of The Monks of New Skete. I just visited their website and see some new products....The book I purchased many ago was The Art of Raising a Puppy. It's been updated with some video's and a doggy IQ test.

That is a great book! I used it to train our Jack Russel Terrier, who basically took the I out of Terrior when he was a puppy, full time job. It was touch and go with him for awhile but now we can take him anywhere off leash, ask Spring Chicken. He is great with kids and other dogs, Cats and Snakes beware. He gets the paper for me every morning and has never pooped or peed in the house. Not a dog for everyone but he has been the best dog I have ever owned. Still as playful as a puppy at nine years old. He is a Dude but go for the Welsh.
  • Where are you located? I have a Cairn terrier and the lady I bought mine from also raises and shows Welsh terriers. I'm partial to the Cairns myself.

  • I'm in NC and I was going to give you the name of the breeder I purchased my Cairn from in you were somewhere in my neck of the country. She also breeds Welshes.
