I thought that I saw a recipe for Baked/BBQ beans on the egg with leftover pulled pork as an ingredient. Does anyone have a favorite recipe for beans? I have been wanting to use my new cast-iron dutch oven and thought these would go well with the butts I am cooking next weekend...

  • bigmikej,
i do baked beans all the time on the egg and they are great!!. . ..[p]first, i would say that whatever your favorite recipe in the oven is, will work just as well on the egg, only it will add more flavor (particularly if throw in a lump of wood. .. [p]second, not sure i would stick a brand new dutch oven in the egg, unless you want to make it your permanent egg pot. ..after reading something hear on the forum, i chose an old steel pot to become my "egg pot", and it has now gotten pretty grungy despite a whole lot of brillo treatments. . .i use it for beans and chili, and it works great, but it is developing a nice 'patina' from the smoke and other stuff that might be in the egg at that time. ...[p]when i do my beans, i take some large cans of "bush's" (family's personal favorite), throw in a chopped up onion, fair amount of brown sugar, few tablespoons of barbecue sauce, splash of tobasco or other hot sauce to taste, and i layer it on top with 4 or 5 pieces of thick cut bacon. . .then i put the pot direct on the grid at around 300 dome temp, and leave it in there uncovered for about 3 hours. . .[p]those beans are delicious, they get a nice smokey flavor to them. . .[p]couple of alternatives. . .we put in a pound of ground burger sometimes (pre-cooked) and it makes for a good casserole. . .you could certainly also throw in some pulled pork. . .[p]if you are doing a butt, i might be tempted to stick the open pot under the butt for a few hours, let that drip directly over the beans, gotta taste good. . .[p]good eats[p]max

bigmikej,[p]The link is to a bean recipe I like to use. I usually double the recipe. I also use a combination of pinto and white navy beans, add a little bbq sauce, add extra pork and cook on the BGE with some smoke. They are pretty good beans.[p]Chuck[p]
