controlling the temp

Last week I put out a couple of posts regarding starting the coals, controlling the temps and cooking whole chickens. Unfortunately I lost track of the thread so a new post simply to say thanks for the responses. I tried both the starter cubes and the the weed burner and both worked far better than the electric starter. I got up to temp quickly and stabalized much faster. I did however get some funny looks from the neighbors who saw me out in the snow with the weed burner. I did three spatchcocked birds with the extender, cooked indirect and they turned out much better than the rubbery beer can chickens I did the first time out. Thanks again for everyone's input.

LJS,
Mark my words! Those very same neighbours with their funny looks will soon be lining up to light the egg for you.

Prob'ly not looking any funnier at you than mine did when I was holding a flashlight in my mouth in pre-dawn light, trying to take a half-done butt off the grate, so I could restart the lump. :S

Got to love the Flame Throwers. Nice way to light the eggs especially when the cook is cold.

Hi Lj
Where do you get a weedburner and how much
do they cost? and to operate?
thanks BullyC -
Got mine at Harbor Freight on sale for $29.95 with push button ignition or I think non ignition for $19.95. comes with the stuff you can just hook it up to the standard propane tank.

I got it at hardware store, either Home Depot or Canadian Tire.It was about 30 dollars. Make sure you get one with a starter on the handle. I just use the small camping propane cannisters for fuel.
