Stupid mistake buying charcoal

Was in Delaware this past weekend and checked out a Ace Hardware outlet store and spotted that red bag of Royal Oak charcoal.I went over and checked out where it was made and sure enough Georgia.The price for a 18 pound bag was $6.49.That gave me the shakes and asked for a quantity discount which was about 5%.They only had six bags on hand which I snatched right away.When leaving the store I said I'll see you next week and order forty more bags.To my dismay when I returned home getting ready to open one up and I felt like a jerk.The word briquets jumped out.



First time that I have ever seen briquets from them so I guess a return is in order.I made the same mistake when Home Depot had that crazy deal on charcoal two years ago and still have 14 bags of that stuff in the shed.Time to go see the eye doctor and get myself a new pair.

I've almost made this same mistake. I was in a supermarket in State College, Pa and saw the RO bags. I've been looking for their lump for a while. So, I loaded my cart with about 6 bags and got all the way to the checkout before realizing they were briquettes. The good news is you can use them!

Great idea!! If my brain is still functional they were $3.00a bag.Just might have to go out and buy some more.

Just a thought, most (if not all) Royal Oak charcoal i have seen has the Roswell, GA address on the bag. That is just the company HQ address.

There is also a line of type on the back of the back that will say "Product of USA" that you need to see.

I know that the Argentine RO lump has the Georgia address on the bag, but also says "Made in Argentina" on there as well.

Just be careful.

I would use it. Just realize it is going to produce way more ash. You'll be fine for burgers chicken and steaks......or you can smoke cheese for the rest of your life with your on hand supply :woohoo:

I had one of those big wagons filled up with that home depot stuff before I realized that they were briquettes. I ended up buying 5 bags to try it out. It did get hot, lit easily and burned fairly clean but it made tons o' ash. I still have three bags left. It is very messy.

Is there a problem with the RO lump from Argentina? I get a #20 bag for $6.95 at Restaurant Depot. 2 locations in ATL.(Norcross and Midtown)

Yep -- I did the Home Depot mistake back then, also -- Went door to door in my neighborhood and gave it all away.

It's too much hassle trying to find half decent lump, so I just get store brand from Whole Foods. Generally, pretty good stuff with the occasional "little-chippie" bag.

I have used it for years, Just lite it slowly. It is not good for high temp cooks. Only low and slow 300 and under. Don't even try to cook a pizza with it. :S :S :S

Yes, Royal Oak US.

You can get both at Restaurant Depot in Atlanta - just check the many pallets and get the right kind. The price is the same for either type - but it is trending closer to $9 per bag these days.
