I haven't been on the board too much recently but have just notice you guys talking about a Nomex gasket for the BGE. Is this the new standard issue gasket with the newer eggs? I need to replace the gasket on my medium egg and wonder whether to go with the Nomex or maybe a ceramic or fiberglass one like mention on Naked Whiz's site. Your take/advice??? I hate having to keep changing gaskets.......

  • I recommend the Nomex. It is only available direct from BGE. Give them a call and ask for one without the adhesive backing. Clean the surface real well and install with 3M Superr 77.

    Notes:
    > Don't stretch the gasket as you are installing
    > Install the gasket flush with the ID of the dome and base - about 1/8" will lap the outside of the egg - no big deal
    > You will likely have a little left over - install it on the inside of your ceramic cap for a snug fit.

    Good luck with it

Definitely go with nomex, installed with 3M adhesive.

Other options are have at least the potential of safety concerns; Nomex and 3M work great, so why risk it with anything else (whether you believe the claims about he other solutions or not).

One note about cleaning the rim; I called HQ because the rim on my LBGE was still tacky from the adhesive on the previous failed gasket and could not find anything that would take it off (acetone, denatured alcohol, heat) and was told that you just need to get all of the "lumps & globs" of the old gasket off and if it is still a little tacky, it is OK.

Also, tape off the rest of your egg; 3M spray adhesive results in a good bit of over-spray.
  • No matter what they say about Fred, this is a helpful video (even with the commercials).
  • Masking is a real good idea because of overspray. Alternatively, someone posted to spray the Super 77 in a cup and apply with a brush. I did this when replacing my mini gasket and it worked well - lot simpler than masking.
