Enamel cast iron

I know some of you use enamel cast iron dutch ovens on the egg. The question is how do they clean up after. We bought us a new 6 quart (red) one yesterday and I was going to do an indirect set up and cook some chili. Just wondering how they clean up. I was thinking as long as I was indirect at about 300 or 350 maybe it wouldn't mess it up at all. Dont really care, i just would probably go back and buy a smaller one to dedicate to the egg if its going to be all messed up. Thanks!

They work great and clean with little effort. I have 3 dutch ovens and a saucier I use in the egg, all enameled CI, and they are in great shape after many, many hours in the lump heat and heavy smoke. They come out looking pretty nasty but wash fine. For the record I have one green and the others are cobalt blue.

I use a green scrub pad and dish soap. For stubborn, baked-on stains I use a little softsoap.

The only hard parts to clean are the little nooks and crannies around the handles.

Thanks Fidel. I will post up pics later of the chili. Happy egging!

I have the same question, thanks for asking. My red is now reddish brown and the innards are more butterscotch than white.

After it's clean, you can fill it with water and add a little bleach. Rinse well after a few hours.

Lemon juice or vinegar and water works well also.

take some dish soap on a paper towel and rub it on the outside of the enameled dutch oven. Makes exterior clean up go easier. I stay a couple inches from the top to avoid any potential of soap in the food.
  • I only have one, but am always looking for another. I clean mine with a green pad and dish soap….Sometimes not even using soap on the inside!!! I swear that at times I can taste a soap taste, if I do!
I have a 5qt. (I think) enameled inside and out, that was my mothers…New in about 1959! I use it often both on the stove, or in the oven and on the Egg.
I’m 100% sure that it isn’t as bright as it was in ’59, but it’s a great roaster!
I would love to fine another made as well (all cast handles and REALLY heavy), but haven’t yet. I keep looking though.
Anyway; with use stuff stains, discolors…and may even have a chip!
    BTW, I don’t look the same as I did in ’59 either….But we’re still both cooking ;) !
