Had an incredible hanger steak at a local restaurant last week and have had it on my mind to try one on the egg. I've been trying to eat healthier in '09 so I'm avoiding all fats. My savior is Crisco spray butter. I use it on absolutely everything. It works great even on popcorn. I found some spray cooking oils that are even garlic, lime and hot pepper flavored which is great on shrimp.
Marinated the hangers overnight in soy sauce and chopped garlic (thanks max!). Next time I will just use some EVOO and s&p as recommended by some forum members. No need for all the sodium.

Got the small up to 500 and stablilized.
Did a quick sear for 2 min. on each side and pulled and pulled at 130. These came out more rare than I care for so will cook to 135 next time.


Served with some crash hot potatoes.
Crash hot potatoes are just red potatoes boiled to fork tender. Placed them on a cookie sheet and sprayed with Pam butter flavored cooking spray. Gave them plenty of room to spread out. Next grab your potato masher and gently press down on the potato until it mashes. Turn masher 90 degrees and gently flatten again. Spray generously with the Crisco butter spray. Sprinkle with some Kosher salt, fresh ground pepper and whatever herb you want (chives & rosemary are good ones). I used choppped garlic and french thyme. It's best to use fresh herbs but didn't have any on hand so I used the dry. That's it! Put on the top rack of a very hot oven (450 degrees) and cook them 20-25 min. or until they are crispy and sizzling. These potatoes are delicious, they're kind of like latkes, if you've ever had them.
Obviously these potatoes can easily be adapted to the egg. I just haven't mastered using 2 eggs yet. I have my hands full with one.


Also made a gaba rice & veggies stir fry.
Gaba or GBR is a sprouted brown rice that is cooked a specific way. It's healthier and tastier in my opinion. Too much to explain here but if you're interested in the health benefits Google "gaba". Yeah, google gaba, I like that, it's got a ring to it.

Anne, that looks just gorgeous!
The gaba sounds intriguing; is there a particular type/brand of brown rice to use, and what method do you use to sprout it? We buy Lowell Farms organic brown jasmine rice which has a really nice nutty flavor (not the typical cardboardy-ness of regular brown rice). We'd love to try gaba, especially with this rice.

Anne, I think you said you live in Milwaukee, do you have a pic of where you keep the egg in the winter? It almost looks like it is some how enclosed. I see snow outside. Our egg is buried here in Oshkosh and I'm betting it is frozen shut, too. Enjoy your pics. Thanks...

Thanks Michelle! I'm actually addicted to GABA rice. I use Texmati Organic brown rice. I use a Zojirushi rice cooker. I can't remember if it's the HBC10 or HBC18. It has a GABA rice setting on which is hard to find on most rice cookers. I love jasmine rice. I'll have to try and find it in the organic brown version. As for the garlic the first 5 lb. container is 2/3 gone. I have to start freezing the other 5lb container.

Hi neighbor! We'll have to get together sometime. What we cook in is our gazebo that we turned into an egghut for the winter. In the summer we have patio furniture in it. It's really nice it has uplighting, infrared heaters, and a ceiling fan, we also ran cable for the tv and speaker wire for music. We have 2 ponds that are about 16,000 gals. each and we have 40 koi and aquatics in them. In the summer it's beautiful. Do you know anyone looking for some fish? We're getting rid of all the koi in spring. Have had them for 10 yrs. and the upkeep from them is more than we bargained for. It started out with one little koi I brought home from the pet shop. Now they've multiplied to over 40. Some are over a foot long. Going to stick with strictly aquatics.

Thanks Jay! The original recipe says to brush olive oil on not the spray butter. I like them better that way but don't like the extra calories. I think they be outstanding on an egg.

I googled gaba and rice cooker and found the Zo's (I have 2 17 year old Zo bread machines that are still going strong
) Looks like the difference in model is just the capacity; 10 is 5 1/2 cup and 18 is 10 cup....
I think you can buy Lowell Farms from their website (and you can search for local stores there, too). It is FAR SUPERIOR to any other brown jasmine I've found, and they're really nice folks to. I buy mine at HEB when we RV in the Austin area (no HEB here in the Metroplex). I stock up and store it in the freezer. We'll be headed that way in a couple of months - pop me an e-mail if you can't find it and I can send a bag your way when I restock.
ETA - I checked www.lowellfarms.com and there are 2 retailers in Wisconsin that carry their rice

Guess the gasket held out well. I had the priveledge of doing a steak class at a fest or two. Things didn't go as planned.

One egg or 2, you can cook for me anyday.

Thanks so much for looking up that info. Graasch foods is only about 10 min. away from my house. I definitely want to try some of the jasmine rice. I have the 10 cup model. I would highly recommend going with the larger one. I make a big batch of it every couple of days. Gaba actually has more health benefits when reheated.

Great idea! My husband is quite inspired by your gazebo and I like that it is heated. Only way to egg up North, I think... Now he has more projects to do. Don't know anyone looking for Koi, they really multiplied. We are sure glad it is above zero now. Maybe we will be able to dig the egg out.
