Has the problem of proper closure of the dome on the SGE been resolved involving the new spring loaded hinge? Also does anyone make a plate setter for a SGE?

Q-BALL,[p]What problem with proper closure with the SGE? That is a false rumor. Maybe some hinges have gotten bent but it is not a problem for most small eggs. Certainly not mine![p]Tim

    Tim,
I think that he is referring to the new spring assist hinge that is not yet available for the small.

    Q-BALL,
For as often as I have tried to find a good ceramic mass for my Small BGE, I have just not been able to do so. The closet that I got was a 12-inch Kiln shelf, but even they restricted the airflow too much to be effective. My old standard are a couple of 3x3 clay baking tiles. Even at that, they will crack but use them any way. [p]There is also a product by Charbroil (I think) that is supposed to be a square ceramic replacement to Lava rocks in a gas grill. I have looked at them often but never purchased them.[p]Beyond a doubt the most useful ceramic mass for the Small BGE is the 9-inch round Baking dish that BGE offers. They are great and I have two. I am not sure if they even make them any more or not so if you can find them get a couple.[p]Hope this Helps,
    RhumAndJerk[p]

Q-BALL,[p]We use a couple of split firebricks. They actually work very well, since there is ample airflow around the bricks, but seems to be enough mass to make indirect work. Since they are made for fireplaces, I assume they'll hold up and not crack....we're about 9 months along with them and not problems so far.[p]QBabe
    :~)

  • RhumAndJerk, I just was given the 9 inch baking dish - I tried pizza but it stuck to the bottom. I think I've figured out how to avoid this but what else do you use the dish for?

    RhumAndJerk,
Jim at BGE says he has plenty of them...I agree they work greak in the small egg.

  • Q-BALL,
I was one of three who got the new spring assisted hinge for the small before the BGE folks realized that the top lid would not seat properly in the back. The top holes in the two brackets on the hinge were drilled about 5/8 inch too high. I spent an hour last weekend filing and moving the holes downward until I got a perfect fit. Frankly, the new hinge is sooo much better I would prefer it misaligned and defective over the old hinge. The fix is so simple surely BGE will have the new hinges out soon.
