Venison & Buttermilk

Hey folks - I was very lucky recently to receive a venison roast and am trying to figure out the best way to cook it. I have heard tell of soaking in buttermilk is a good thing. I really have no way of knowing how the deer was dressed (quickly or dragged across the mountains). Any tips on this will be much appreciated.

Might be too late, but I always marinate it in coke and they wrap in bacon, then cook at around 350 degrees.
