Inspired by this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUJwGGXfpP4 I researched into the LooftLighter and found its specs: 2000 watts, >1000*F, same technology as heat gun for stripping paint.

For comparison my old heat gun's specs are quite close at: 1500 watts, 842*F.

First I tried it on a piece of used lump and it took almost a minute to start sparking. Next I experimented on a fresh lump, and lo and behold, it started sparking in 5 seconds. Wow! what a pleasant surprise. I'm gonna try it on the real setup for my next cook.

Edit: Just did a search on 'heat gun' and realised some eggers already use this method.
