Branding Iron question

I got a branding iron (a Longhorn) for Christmas and need some advice on how to use it. I am sure an Aggie or Sooner would be happy to tell me where I can stick it. :)

I am thinking cook the steak as usual. Then when I take the meat off place it on a plate next to the Egg and place the branding iron down in the lump and angle it so the handle is outside. Obviously this means leaving the lid open which may make it really flame up. How long does it need to be in lump that was just creating a 650 degree fire? I then brand the steak.

Is that the way to do it? Does it make more sense to brand the meat before cooking?
