Gloves ??

Good morning and Merry Christmas Eve!
Need some advice on a good pair of gloves for the egg. Some that are extra long to protect from the heat and flare-ups when I open it during high heat seers and also pliable enough to handle hot items coming off the cook.
Is there any such gloves? I see lots of different ones on the net but wondered if any of you had recomendations for a good pair. I need some and would also like to give my son-in-law a pair since his wonderful wife just gave him a large egg and nest for Christmas!!
Thanks guys, and Merry Christmas to all. And here's hoping 2009 is better than they are predicting!

I use the ones made by ORKA (sp). They are like mittens rather than gloves with fingers, but seem to work well for me. And they go in the dishwasher to be cleaned.

Skip the barbecue store and head directly to your local welding supplier. Welding gloves have great temperature barrier, go high up your forearm, and are significantly less expensive than the ones you find in the fireplace/barbecue stores.

Welding gloves, Home Depot or Lowes
-
I'll second that recommendation (Orka)

I have a set of Raichlen's silicone gloves. They work well for removing meats from the grill, but are not heat resistant enough to remove plate setters, cast iron pans, etc. They are similar to the orka gloves but are five-fingered as opposed to mitten style.
For plate setters and pan removal I use thick leather fireplace gloves. I usually buy several pairs at closeout in the spring for $2-3 per pair. -
and yet another vote for the Orkas! Welding gloves are OK for some tasks but when you're going in harm's way like removing a hot plate setter you'll appreciate the 500° protection of these.

Are they long enough to protect your arm when you open the egg and get a big blowout? (I know, I know, you're suppose to let it breathe first....but sometimes you just don't have time)
I haven't had any hair on the bottom of my left arm in 4 years now! I smell like a 1950's beauty parlow in Harlem when I bring the meat in!

Funny you should ask...
Based on an early forum posting, I have ordered (but haven't yet received) these 700º-rated kevlar and wool gloves from Grainger:
Grainger's a bit of a pain to order from, as they require a formal account setup and approval and deal only with business customers. If you can find a Grainger retail outlet nearby, that might be easier.
I'll post a review when received. And if they don't work, at least with that color scheme I'll be stylin', right? -
I got a couple of pair of double thickness leather gloves at Home Depot for about $4 a pop, Pop. I use them for everything and unless you like to dally awhile over the heat, or hold your Platesetter for 10 min, they are fine. They don't even get warm.

ORKA's look to stiff for me. I choose a PVC glove and don't know how I lived without them. Great for prepareing the hardware and moving or picking up the food. Great for holding food while cutting. They are ususlly wool lined and clean up real easy unlike the leather welding gloves. I have never felt any heat come through these.
BBQ Guru has them-

If you have access to a "Safety Supply" type store, you can usually pick them up for about $3.50/pair.
Here is an online source selling them for $1.69

Another great one is the San Jamar UltiGrip. These are also awsome! Restaurant Grade. I have a pair of each size they make. Love um so much I sell them-

More expensive then most but a wonderful glove. Is now the favorite of my wife and daughters. -

I got these at a welding supply store. They work well, but you just can't hold a hot platesetter for too long ! !

Pop,
I have a pair of leather grill gloves that I get at ACE Hardware I think they are $16.00 they go up to my elbow and work great. You wouldent want to use them for food so I have a pair of Okras for that. With the leather you can't hold the plate setter for long but it has always been enough for my needs.

I can order things from WW Granger and have them shipped to your address, and I would be glad to help, if you go with the ones from Granger.
Merry Christmas.

The Orkas come in two lengths - mine are 11" but they sell 14". I've never been burnt with the 11". OTOH I use these shorties in the kitchen oven, but not in my eggs.

Thanks for the offer Jim. I'll let you know if I go that route. I am heading out to Airgas now to see what they have in stock.
