Every once in a while, I love to expose myself, er, my ignorance. I was in my local grocery and saw a sign in the fish case that said "Trout". Sometimes it isn't clear which sign goes with which fish, so I was a little surprised when I asked for "trout" that he grabbed some fish that was the color of salmon. I thought trout would be a white colored meat, but hey what do I know? I could swear I had some smoked trout in a restaurant that was whitish in color. So, is all trout the color of salmon? Only certain kinds? [p]The Naked Don't-Ask-Me-To-Take-You-Fishing Whiz

The Naked Whiz,[p]I'm not an expert by any means. I do know that some of what is sold as salmon in stores is actually a variety of farm raised trout.
  • The Naked Whiz, I love to Trout fish as much as I love cooking on the BGE. The only places I have fished is N.GA, Tenn. and N.C. The Trout I catch from the streams I fish are white to a very light pink colered meat. I can not speak for Lake Trout or Farm raised Trout. The Trout I catch and cook are in the 9 to 12 inch range, I cook them whole, and they are a mild fish, and very good eating. I have not tried them on the BGE yet, I have mostly cooked them while camping on an open grill with some foil on it. Good Luck![p]Hugh, "Sitting on The Dock of The Woods"

  • The Naked Whiz,
My wife is from south Louisiana, and her whole family are big fishermen...her dad is a guide in fact. Speckled trout are very common, and very good, but they are white to a very light pink. I don't know about farm raised, but wouldn't think that the difference would be quite that drastic.

The Naked Whiz,What you purchased was probably "Steelhead Trout". Cross between Salmon and Trout and good stuff! My PUBLIX carries it when they can get it.

  • Jeff,
Trout are members of the Salmon Family. SteelHead trout are trout that swim out to sea. They will return to the river to spawn. Most Steelhead trout or the owns I caught were Rainbow Trout. I caught and Cooked Rainbows, Brookes, Browns
and Tiger Trout. All had white meat but every once in a while the meat would look like the color of salmon.[p]George

    The Naked Whiz,
There are several variables that can affect the coloration of trout flesh, but diet seems to have the most affect. Trout which live in a stream or lake rich in crustaceons, especially fresh water shrimp, will have flesh that is pink in color. Trout, and other fish, which come from these environs tend to have a sweeter flavor than others. In particular, I have found trout from Jackson Reservoir in Jackson Hole, WY, to be very tastey, and the ones that I had from that lake were quite pink.
